church
seeking salvation guided by the sign you will be embraced forgiven your sins from who cast the first stone and yet, who embraces you and leads you by hand maybe the one who has most to hide
doubled
"And you wouldn't know it was happening" she remarked as she squirted some gel onto her hands, nose twitching slightly in disgust, "these germs multiplying, crawling, breeding." She took her watch off her wrist and dropped it in the hand bag, at fingertips as if infected. "They say the germs double every few seconds until hours later there are millions of them." Beat. "Everywhere."
beaming
Column of dust dancing, lifting up and down like lava in a lamp, caught in the sun beams. Squinting, he closed the book and took a deep breath. 'Make hay while the sunshines' they used to say to him, and as he rolled the mobile phone around in his hands he knew it was time to make the phone call.
tracking
Head up and walking with purpose, convinced himself that no one was following him. Then his mind re-runs a scene from a sleepy 1970s cop show, the PI trailing the adulterer to get photographic evidence.
exactly
Exactly. Precisely. Precision. The devil of the pedant. Structure and routine, perhaps and order or sequence. Rather than vague, inaccurate, or close to. The random danger of freedom and fluidity v the rigid unchanging but predictable uniformity.
elevator
He decided that morning he was going to take a chance. Live a little. Humming a bob Marley song he can never remember the name of, he stepped into the Elevator. Ten floors to choose from, he took two dice out of his pocket, shook them in his hands and peaked in a the result. His mystery tour began.
meanwhile
Meanwhile she folded up the newspaper and tucked it in the front of her bag. 'That's the one he bought me at that weekend to Edinburgh'. She saw the couple at the neighbouring table collect their coffee, all smiles and touching hands. 'Errrgh'. She shuddered, scratched her shoulder. But the itch was deep in her thoughts and not satisfied by clawing at her skin. She wished she had never sent the text message now.
defended
'Fight, fight fight!' Conkers and jam sandwiches. Pumps kicking up a cloud of dust. Dunlop bags, satchels, jumpers thrown down to mark goals. 'Big ears!' 'Leave her alone fat face' Shirts rolled up, ripped blazer badges. Shoulder above, teacher holds them apart
irreverent
There is so much etiquette around queuing. As an experienced and venerable queuer, should there be such a descriptive, I can handle them with curtesy and respect, how to direct oneself in the 'fork' for instance, the single queue that splits at the head into multiple points of access. The 'snake' which slinks across territory and has to split and reform to allow traffics to pass it's disjointed body, or perhaps the hardest and most susceptible to irreverence is the 'bridge' which passes a thorough fare, such as ATM on a busy high street - prone to leaks and barges from the disrespectful and uneducated.
clasp
She flicked her to one side and tipped her head forward. He passed the necklace under her chin and brought the ends up behind her neck. Fumbling he tried to fasten the clasp.
