companion
We sat together on the bench watching tugs and fishing boats in the channel. He ate the fries from lunch. I smoked a cigarette. We never said a word, just watched the ocean.
tires
On the back of my Colts' ticket is a coupon for $100 off a set of four tires at Tire Barn. Really useful to have eight of those for my dilapidated Volkswagen.
penguin
She said I looked like a penguin dressing up to go out on the town. I commented that there were no towns in Antarctica, just research stations. She said that was just like me to make a joke out of her statement. I said that was a statement? She said more like a criticism. I said hmmm.
danced
The light danced in my eyes. I saw her image flicker and fracture like a kaleidoscope of color. I put my arms out so she would lean herself into me. She disappeared and I wept.
coffeehouse
Dark and dirty, the Edison Coffeehouse on Washington Street kept in business due to the plethora of crack they sold out the kitchen door. You would enter, order a dirty latte from the barista, he would take your name, and then you'd proceed out into the alley to pick up your drugs.
bulb
The old woman moved slowly along the flower bed, a rubber pad beneath her knees, digging deep, narrow trenches into which she placed four tulip bulbs each.
lighters
There are a lot of old lighters in the box: red, green, BIC, the kind that require lighter fluid and a flint. I had an American flag lighter that I would bring out during anti-war demonstrations. And another that would light no matter the weather. Of course, I smoked back then. The landfill will claim all of these. Except the American flag one. That's a memento.
hospital
When I woke up I could hear an electronic tone repeating itself. I could not see anything in the dime light. I was lying down with a cover over my body and I felt something wrapped around my arm. All this was not reassuring.
pills
My hand trembled as I tried to pry open the pill bottle. It was hard enough trying to outwit a child, but out-dueling a prescription bottle cap was even more difficult. Finally I grabbed a chef's knife from the kitchen and chopped the bottle in two. Now, why was I taking these pills?
nominated
Brad got the nomination for Congress by besting his opponents. He got pictures of Nelson shacking up with another man's wife. Teresa was seeing Brenda in the teacher's lounge at Northwood high School. The biggest problem was William. Brad had to hire an assassin.
