bagel
"bagels? i should eat actual food before eating ice cream," she said, shoving the bag of plain baked loops back into my hands. "cream cheese may be dairy and bagels may be a grain, but i don't think plain ones count. starch and carbs, more like." alice rounded the island planted in the middle of the kitchen, topped with speckled black granite. "i could make something, quick"
root
Roots and shoots. Or chutes? There was something to that effect at my church, but i'm not really sure what exactly it was about. Something about planting roots among fellow church members? I don't know. I don't really care. I've kind of grown away from church. I still go for mom, but I don't know if it's really doing anything for me any more at this point in my life .. weird, because I always said I'd never be that person. You always turn into what you say you'll never, be, right?
braid
braid. i wear braids to work for every shift because it's nice and keeps my hair completely out of the way. however, i hate it at the same time because i feel like older men in the restaurant look at me in a way that makes me uncomfortable. they'll make comments and passes that i brush off, but it's so gross. the cooks are just as bad. maybe i should just stop wearing braids.
copper
I remember when I was young being told that pennies were made from copper. I thought copper was some valuable material because why would money not be made from something valuable? Money has value therefore the substance its built from should hold value as well. I also remember counting my hoarded pennies and the gross smell of copper getting itself all over my hands.
flakes
Flakes. There's so many different meanings to one word. Flakes could imply snowflakes or cornflakes or scalp flakes, as gross as it is to think about that. There are friends described as flakes who bail out on plans you had for weeks or there are flakes of gold that you can pan out of a river if you're extremely lucky. Flakes, flakes, flakes.
