I thought it would be fun to try what I’ve seen on TV dozens of times. Just a strip of duct tape, pressed to my mouth like some poor hostage. Then, with one quick motion, RIPPING it off my face. In theory, it was an exercise in proving my toughness. In reality, I had silvery muck on my cheeks for days, and a quick motion drawn out into the slowest, most painful bandaid removal of my life.
Like breast duct? How funny (funny not being the right word) to get this word now, today, as I anxiously await my mastectomy on Wednesday. Hopefully they will not find any signs of cancer in my…. not ducts, why am I blanking on the word? Nodes? In any case, I already DO have cancer in my ducts, which is why the chemo and probably the radiation and…. Let me write about another kind of duct. Tear duct. Will I cry after my surgery? Will my ducts serve as a way to cleanse myself of grief. To relieve some of the built up anxiety, perhaps? To express joy about being on the other side and being healthy and alive and able to watch my children grow and age and fall in love and find jobs and express their own joys and grief? What else can I write with my 60 seconds? I can’t believe it hasn’t been 60 seconds yet! I could write about duct tape. Always handy to have that around, my old boyfriend used to say. He’s right– just the other day, we went searching for duct tape to pull out the cactus hairs in my son’t hand and bottom! A neat trick, that was. Still not 60 seconds? That’s impossible. There is a problem that’s been ongoing in my household: having to deal with the air duct inside the bathroom. It’s been cutting out because we keep it on nearly every single hour. On Okinawa, it’s an important part because it helps keep the mold down to a minimum. The humidity on this small, beautiful island is ridiculous even after living here for the first 10 years. Afterwards, it’s just like living in a sauna eight months annually on average. =]
It was emptying out into the river. She watched the mud mix with the algae and turn the water grey. Everything was a little bit grey, she thought. People, plants, the sky. It was all just different colors of grey.
Dexter was shaking as a leaf and backed away from the intimidating stranger. The stranger beckoned for his friend who provided him a roll of duct tape. The stranger proceeded to strip a layer of duct tape and applied in on Dexter’s mouth.
The duct work was immaculate. I peered up into the darkness, breathing in deeply to prepare myself, mentally. That was a really small duct. Was I really going to do this? Before I could answer myself, my partners in crime lifted me and shoved me up through the hole.
“This is going to suck,” I said aloud.
There was a whole sandstorm in her eyes. She’d woken after a thousand year slumber, and her eyelids were caked shut with something thicker than mud and harder than stone. Slowly, she tested her bindings, waiting for the hard clay that covered every inch of her old flesh to crack and fall apart, as she rose. Rose out of dust and time to shower a world that had forgotten her in her ancient gold and glory.

The once immortal curses but keeps moving, hating and loving the tinny voice shrieking in his ear to move faster dammit. Because they’re right behind him and they know it.

cerebral spinal fluid.

because children need to sit still,

to everything that comes out of adults
because adults are right.

I found a roll of duct tape underneath my father’s bed and wondered just what he planned to do with it. Keep in mind, this was after I found a hammer, a box of pushpins, and a switchblade in the exact same spot on the dusty carpet. I was collecting all of these items and putting them in a wooden chest of my own, kept away from my father’s sight. He never brought up any of the missing objects, so I didn’t say anything about them, either.
The metal clanked beneath Jane’s belly; part of this was the sound of her toes hitting the bottom of the duct, and part was independent rattling and growling of pipes. She knew she has passed over a hot water line when she felt the warmth against her palms through the metal.
The man looked away. The ducts of the pipes above his head showed no signs of improving despite the maintenance teams above him- the city of Rome’s aquaducts were falling apart gradually. And there was nothing anyone could do. Piece by piece, the lead fell away.
Duct tape really CAN fix everything. Except relationships, she thought to herself. Myth and I have known each other for centuries… and yet he STILL won’t accept the apology I didn’t even owe him- and that was eons ago! It’s not MY fault those people reacted the way they did. Why can’t he understand that?!
There is a rat scurrying along inside the air duct between my room and the kitchen downstairs. I’m not sure if he’s inside it or on top of it, but the sound seems like it would be the same.

Oh sure, the pain in his knees was new, and he wasn’t quite as svelt as he was when he first signed up, but even so, there was a certain nostalgic ease to crawling through this ventilation shaft. The laser beams up ahead, however, those might prove to be a young man’s game.
I bought some colorful duct tape a few days ago, and I’ve been using it to make all kinds of things, including flowers and bracelets. It was somewhat expensive, but I might actually buy more.
