  1. Flying higher and higher, I saw the everything get smaller and smaller. The people, the houses, the trees. I stopped, so high I floated near a cloud.

From up here, looking down on this world, I saw destruction.

  2. Can you take me higher? No? I don’t think so…. Between my own breath, choking the life from me, and my lack of will to stand in your presence, I do not think that higher is on my already exhausted list of things-to-do-today. No… Higher is a word, much like never, that is written upon my heart.

  3. Up we go, through the atmosphere, higher and higher. We burst through the clouds and the water covers my body and makes me shiver, but we keep going. We’re unstoppable, invincible, indestructable.

I push. Her legs kick up in front of her like the tails of a curly-haired kite. She’s all colors, all smiles.

    “Higher, Uncle Jerry! Higher!”

She’s streaming through the sunlight streaming through her hair, which is streaming out behind her. Her eyes are bluer than the sky. Her tongue pokes slightly out of her mouth as she laughs. After this, she’ll ask for ice cream.

Let me get lost in the veil of your shadow.

Maybe you’d send moon rocks and space dust for our birthdays – a reminder that you’re still alive, and not very far away. Maybe we’ll see you twinkling in the sky, coated with astro dust and existing among the stars like the unreachable dream you are.

Maybe you’ll remember us, and I’ll be lucky to even see you again in a hundred years.

  16. It was one of those experiences that is abundant in metaphorical resonance, and all about metaphorical resonance. It was one of those odd experiences where reading the book made you feel like you were missing some very real, internal part of yourself that was there before.
