Jacob wasn’t convinced that the math homework was a worthwhile way to spend his time. Especially when he could easily think of a million things to do that would be more productive than banging his head on the desk, trying to pretend the secrets to calculus would ever be revealed to him. He just hated it. He couldn’t remember when his relationship with math had turned sour, he just knew that somewhere along the line, something had gone horribly wrong.
The snake pit was pushing it. The swinging blade of death was more than I had prepared for, but I continued on. But this, this is asking too much. What prize could possibly be worth this?

And I wonder it too, whenever my heart throws a tantrum and overtakes all of my breathing with it’s beating. When I can’t hear it anymore. It’s easy to feel like a sacrifice in this case.

(She’d started talking to herself recently, using made-up words, and every time she did she would feel a giddy laugh trying to squeeze out of her throat.) She’d thought she was the misfit here, certain everyone’s test averages were 20 points higher than her in high school (she was pretty sure she had gotten in because of her genius cousin who she collaborated with in making a robotic helicopter; he wanted her to get in so he let her take credit for it in her application essay). Here they talked about physics and chemistry and math like she did with her sister on television dramas, and she saw them as interesting for the first time; it wasn’t long before she could make up nerdy jokes of her own.
In life, find what you are passionate about.
Forget about the money, the popularity.
Do what makes you happy.
And you will be able to look at your life and absolutely love it.
