  5. Sweep. Like a broom. Brooms sweep and I know that. But what is what? Do brooms really ‘sweep’ or do they ‘swoop’? I have no idea. Do you? You don’t either. No one does. If you know, you’r lying. Brooms sweep, or do they swoop? Or do they swiff-sweep? I don’t know anymore.

So she got out her broom and went to work, sweeping away at the filth and the grime. “My boy”, she spoke to herself, “I love him to death, but he is as dirty as the Earth itself.”

She scrubs them herself anyway when she gets home.

Until her fingertips are red raw and beads of sweat form on her forhead.

She despairs about the growing cracks in the concrete and scowls at the sight of cigarette butts on the ground.

  19. the word sweep makes me think of removing something from it’s current place to another, possibly to make it’s current place seem tidier or to hide some dark truth about the object. It can be a good thing or a bad thing, you could be making it’s current place a better place overall or you could be suppressing something until later. For myself however I think the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

these things that will never be mine.

  24. There is a skill to sweeping the floor. You must stroke the bristles across the surface with complete attention and a smooth movement. A good sweeper, watched from a distance, is as fluid as Fred Astaire, and the line of dirt at his feet a chorus of grace.

  31. Sometimes we have to sweep our floors. In order to sweep you need a broom and a dustpan. Be sure not to sweep your dirt under the rug. No matter which way you sweep, you will eventually get you home clean. Sweeping is especially important in your kitchen to help keep dirt down in that high traffic area.

  38. I sweep the room slowly with my eyes and find no place to rest them. Where do we go now? The Syrian desert is too vast for us to comprehend that we are totally, irrevocably lost for all time. There is no turning back. This is our life, now and forever.

there is no romance in this desert, only thirst and lack of knowledge. We have come here in great expectation not realising that we will never leave. This concept is far too terrifying to break through into our concious mindsand we retreat into our imaginary worlds of desert riders in blue turbans who gallop to our rescue, taking us to Krak Chevalier and dates and sherbert and voluptuous, dark eyed maidens.
No magic carpets here, just a sweep; a sweep of desolate, deserted sands stretching for unimaginable miles to our eventual dissipation into the glowing, shifting horizons.
