  9. I looked around at the cameras that were flashing at me and all the people gathered around. They wanted to hear what I had to say about this, my opinion. It was a little nerve wracking to know that people all over the world will be watching or listening to this. Scrutinizing it and analyzing every word I say to interpret it as they will. I looked at the cameraman right in front of me, camera on my face. I squared my shoulders,looked straight at the camera and gave the world my statement.

    It took her a moment. She blinked. Then blinked again.
    “I’m sorry, what?” As if she wasn’t sure of the words that had left his lips.
    “I can’t speak to you anymore.” This time he couldn’t meet her eyes, his voice was lower.
    Eight years they’d known each other. Eight years they’d been close friends – dependent on one another, there for break-ups, deaths, personal disasters, successes and failures of every kind. And yet here he was, unable to really look at her, and telling her that he couldn’t even exchange a goddamn word with her anymore.
    “Well you’re wrong then, clearly,” she laughed darkly. “You just spoke to me, so I’d say you’re more than capable.”

I’m not living, yes I laugh i smile but theres nothing in those gestures. they are nothing but empty expressions forced from my mouth by the pressure to be happy. i am not allowing myself to be unhappy, i cant be. not because of you. you can’t do this to me. i wont let you.

A statement can speak volumes about a person, or it may say nothing at all. Words are what we make of them. Words are what we let them be. Statements are tools to make the most or least of ourselves.

It had one, just not one that they could find. The close minded instructors didn’t realize her intentions in the photo, thought they were there. Why had she taken this class? They never focused on the art, just on the principle. They wanted broad, obvious meanings behind each picture, not the discreet, smaller ones she often employed.

  25. I live my life as a partial lie. I wanted people to know about me, without knowing about me. I wanted to let them know that I’ve been through the traumatic stuff, but I didn’t want them to know what I had been through. I had to compromise, so I made a statement instead of a reference.
