  2. A penny for your toughts, I’ll say. Not even a million, you’ll reply. I am allowed to ask, and to know the answer to every question I make, you’ll go on. But you only get what I choose to give you.

  4. Stepping over his now unconscious adversary, Wei swiftly surveyed the remains of the apartment. There amid the debris lay the smashed piggy bank, and thousands of pennies strewn across the floor. One of those pennies, Wei knew, was an ingenious fake: a container carrying the flash chip he’d been sent to recover. Ten governments and twenty corporations would kill for it; Wei’s job was to deliver it to his employer.

Suddenly, a shrieking s’égosiller of stentorian sirens shattered the silence. Wei must act fast and make his escape. Gathering the pennies and stuffing them into a sock, he heard a telltale click. Instantly Wei whirled and hurled the heavily laden sock full of pennies across the room to knock the gun out of the shaking hands of his adversary.

Wei retrieved the sock full of pennies, and threw open a window to make his escape. … “Wait,” whimpered his defeated foe; “please, leave me just one of those pennies, just one — one chance among thousands.” Wei laughed, reached into a pocket, and threw down a roll of benjamins. “You fought well. A worthy adversary is worth more than a penny.”

Why am I compelled to follow these directions each and every time I see a one cent piece on the ground?

  7. I hate pennies. Everytime I see a penny I have to cover it with something, throw it away, or force someone to take it. It’s fine if it’s in a piggybank or in a wallet (even my wallet) but it’s NOT OKAY for it to be just chillin’ somewhere like the floor, or a seat, or on a table. I hate pennies and buttons. And all things around those size. Dimes, nickels, quarters don’t matter as much.

  11. There was a penny on the ground and I didn’t know what I’d do with it because it was clearly foreign because we don’t have pennies over here, but I still picked it up. Now I have no idea where it is. Starving orphans could use it to eat! How terrible.

  12. I wish I had a penny. They are so hard to come by these days. Every single day, I go to the supermarket and all they ask for are copious sums of money, based on green papers that are indeed quite useless as they burn and rip quite easily, whereas the copper of the coin lasts for a much longer time.

  17. I found a penny once. It was shiny and new. I don’t like pressing pennies in those weird machines. It seems to ruin the penny, you know? Penny was in Dr Horrible. I liked her character. I liked all the characters in that actually. But, there was just something magical about that musical short thing, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.

  18. A small copper piece laying on the ground, its face gouged by the pavement, its luster lost to shoe-mark and raindrop. No one notices its former brilliance. It holds no value, though some one at some point may have held it with a sense of wonder and accomplishment. All time holds no reasons for the penny.

  21. A penny saved is a penny earned, but it’s still useless. It’s much more valuable to spin it on a table, or through it at a drunken roommate to see if he can catch it. The material used to make it is worth more than a cent..

  24. Penny again?? I thought this crazy machine would randomly generate a word for me each and every time my own special word….

Anyway, enough of that. Pennies. That saying. you know it. It doesn’t work here in Australia but we have 5 cent pieces which are about the same. I realised once that that saying is just an excuse for people to pick up worthless bits of money without looking like derelict scavengers

  25. penny penny penny yeah ok reminds me of the x files. scully finds two pennies joined through their centres, so that if you were to wrap them up in string it would be a perfect ball. I would like to find some pennies like that one day.

  26. a penny for your thoughts is that common saying. I love finding lucky pennies on the ground. If they aren’t lucky (face side up) I always turn them over so other people can find them and have their own little bit of luck for the day.

  28. Jennsen was moping at the table when a slender hand, pale as milk touched him lightly on the shoulder. He looked up and was met with eyes the color of a tarnished penny – green with copper flecks. She was not beautiful, probably not even before the broken nose and the wound that caused that awful scar across her forehead and cheek, but there was something in those eyes and in her smile that warmed his heart.
    “Why so down?” She asked.
Jennsen could not think of a response. All of a sudden the trifle incident at the courtyard seemed less than insignificant.
“I wasn’t down,” he said, “that’s just a look I assume to lure in unsuspecting maidens.”
The girl looked around, “I don’t see any maidens.”
A wry smile spread across Jennsen’s face.

  31. Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck…I don’t believe in luck. A penny, helping me through my day? Preposterous. I left the penny on the ground. As I walked away, I almost regretted it. I should have gone back for it. It really did make me sad, leaving it there. But that’s preposterous.

  34. I found a penny in the street, and had but to wonder where it had dropped from. The pocket of some passing businessman or from the hand of a child, clenching it tightly in hopes that it will get him one step closer to buying that piece of candy he eyed in the shop three blocks hence. Perhaps it came from a bird’s nest high within the trees above, put in for its shininess and now lost to the family.

  39. Penny was her name but she was worth so much more to me. I sometimes think her parents may have given her a complex with such a name, but really it made her work that much harder to prove her value. And she succeeded. God, did she ever succeed.

  40. today i dropped a penny on the deck, and i almost didnt pick it up because well, what is a penny really worth? i really think they are just extra weight on my person. no one uses them anymore and they seem kind of antiquated. even my job doesnt even accept them anymore… so if business are doing this, doesnt that say something about the poor silly, little penny? it must be wierd to not be needed anymore no? something we all fear i suppose.
