  19. paperback dreams. novels contained in flimsy covers, badly kept secrets that spill. cheap mistakes, picked up in trainstations, with the indescribable lure of the disposable. the aesthetic was never so right. paperbacks, trails forty stories tall. we turn over a new leaf to write the same thing in different letters. word by word we script the same encounters.

  29. It sat on the seat at the airport, fat and abandoned, its spine broken from being spread open for devouring. In its guts, the naked and the cocksure wrestled over dilemmas no real person ever touched, and you could see their hyperbolic frictions had chewed and torn the cover. But the story stopped here at Gate 73, the actors frozen in tableau on page 247.

  35. Today, Parker asked our group of friends if “anyone even bought books anymore”. I was astounded, immediately demanded to know why he would ask such a thing. “I have four in my purse right now.”

“I have ten on my iphone,” he responded. “And it takes up little to no room.”

“But that’s not at all the same.” I sounded whinier than intended. But when he asked how come, I couldn’t find the words. Oh, books. I’ve failed you.
