  21. I looked at the Major’s eyes. Pale, defeated eyes. I knew before he said anything that we had lost the batalion. The nemy was far too strong. And we were simply no match. I looked away, pretending not to have seen him. But he knew that I saw the sadness in those pale eyes. Those pale gray eyes. It was the lowest point of the war at that point. And we had only been fighting for a month. All I could do was think about what was going to become of us. As a people. As a species. As a planet. And the only answer was in the form of the casualties list that I had to telegraph to the east coast the next day. There were no survivors. The enemy had defeated us handily. They were that much closer to taking us once and for all. There was nothing we could do. Nothing, but watch as the world as we knew it crumbled at our feet. All of our military prowess meant nothing. We might as well have been ants. They extirminated us.
