    Now here he lies.

I’m not sure it ever sank into me exactl what I had lost. A sense of guilt that hangs over me that my words to him were not always pure and full of grace. Asking God for his forgiveness…

  21. “Oh, that’s our cousin,” she whispered. I looked over at him. He was staring out into the ocean. All I could see was the back of his head, hanging low. “He’s been having issues with his powers lately.” Joslyn glanced at me and then looked into the water like she was searching for something.

  22. UGH cousin how you gonna be sayin that up to my face, what. You and I went back so far but now you gone and trashed it, trashed us, trashed everything UGH. Cousin what you playin at. UGH!!!! I am so UGHin right now it aint even describable what my UGHin is like. UGH!!!!

  23. We are all cousins on this Earth. From the crows in the sky, to the bluejays that steal the nests of others, all the way down to the deer and the humans. The insects, even, are our cousins, and we all live here. Sometimes I wonder why so few of us treat this world like we have no others to take care of.

  24. He came in from out of town and he looked like it. Kid was a fucking tragedy, really. He smiled too much, and was far too impressed by everything. But when you come out of small-town catholic Wisconsin, what, really, can you do?

His highschool prom was a fucking tragedy. The only people he went to school with were our cousins. I thanked any attentive deities my parents had moved away from that trap.

  26. It was weird, sitting across the table from my cousins. These two people, a boy and a girl I had a familial relation with, were foreign to me. We hadn’t had the traditional memories of growing up together. There hadn’t been times spent eating around the dining table, playing in the backyard, or conspiring against our parents’ draconic bedtimes. It was just a relationship of obligation, one which I wished I could cast off and leave behind.

  27. I have TONS of cousins, honestly, and I don’t know a single one. They live so very far away, you see, and I’ve never had the chance to meet them while not sleepy and subdued by jet lag and funerals.

  28. It takes a while before he realizes the inevitable truth. They are more alike than he knows.

It’s not just physical appearance, though that seems to help the image along. The way they think. The way they have been raised. The way their friends crowd around them with the expectation of their lead. It’s all very similar. It makes Harry sick just thinking about it.

Tom Marvolo Riddle Jr. could have been his cousin, a brother, what with all the comparisons matching up. They are alike, they are alike, and they are.

And just like a cousin, they share blood. No matter how much he wants to deny it.

  29. I remember when we were little. She was the big sister I didn’t have and I was the little sister she didn’t have. Around her, I got to be the little one, I didn’t have to be responsible. And she got to boss me around and have some sort of authority. It was perfect – perfect juxtaposition.

  31. Why don’t they give me a word other than cousin? What’s with this nonsense? I’m done writing about cousins. I want a different word – something fresh and new, to grease the rusty wheels in my head and get them to churn out creativity again.

  32. How am I supposed to write a good paragraph about cousins in sixty seconds? Should I write about annoying ones, jealous ones, ones that hold you when you’re upset? I don’t have any cousins. None that fit those descriptions in any case.
