Other things get in the way, being too busy or too tired, too full of stress and preoccupation. A climb or hike like that would be healing and renewing to me.

  11. mountains are there to climb – you get a sense of achievement when you have scrambled up three thousand feet, up to the snow level, among the rocks and the dust devils, the world is clean and new and primitive, and you can see for miles and miles and miles. You can tell mountaineers – they are silent, they talk very little, and their eyes have a distant, dreamy look.

Already they are dreaming of their next cold bride….

  21. I begin to look up the chain. There are 176 links in this chain, and I think, somehow, that I can make my way, loop by loop, to the top of the chain. I strain, pulling myself higher, gently rising, staggered, until little wisps of cloud surround my head, and I reach the point where my beads of sweat instantly freeze.

  27. To climb is to branch out. To scale upward in a sprawling wind tunnel of scratch trees and sharp edges. To fall is to let go. Once you’re reached a certain high you’ll plummet back to the earth. Some people don’t come back until they’ve reached the top.
