Dense" was a word Connie used. Are you completely Dense? she would say. She was somewhat cultured in her speech, in that she would never call someone stupid, or ugly, or anything common. Dense. Or vapid. Still her insults would sting like a snowball, densely packed, left in the freezer until July and crystallized.

the playground was full that hot hazy august afternoon. already the children longed for the company of playmates further afield not the kids from their own blocks. shiny faced mothers scolded about hats and dug in brightly coloured tote bags for juices, waters and their own craft or magazine. september is coming, they told themselves as they paged through sweater patterns. september is coming and I get my life back.

the evidence was there in his pocket. a name a phone number and a map, in flourescent purple gel ink, written on the inside of a pack of green death cigarettes. The only person she knew who smoked those was Charlene, and she also had paid at the bar enough to know that Charlene liked purple ink. So he had been to Charlene's house, and been there enough he didn't need the map anymore.
