She won at sailing and fencing and the modern pentathlon at her school. That’s kind of like seven wins altogether! She never called it “victory,” perhaps because she was a little bit annoying and liked to rhyme “win” with her name.
when i win i think about how sad the losers must feel but i also think about how good that makes me look. do i look good for reasons other than myself? do i want someone to notice me or make record of this tiny, trivial success? who gives a damn… in the course of a lifetime.
And I looked at their faces, one by one, carefully, cautiously. I spoke, they stared. Time stopped, or maybe, slowed down a bit. I wasn’t sure. Slowly they started to smile at me. Some with a little bit of sadness in their eyes.
I never knew I could win their hearts with what I said.
