  1. “Eileen! Go talk to him!” Mother pinched me on the arm and I winced, shooting her a glare. “Isn’t that the handsome young man your sister was going on and on about the other day?”

“Yes, I believe so. But, mother—” Alas, I was cut off from speaking.

“No buts, dear! Go, go! I like how he looks, he seems very polite. And isn’t he set to inherit his father’s estate? Old man Burke, correct?”

I rolled my eyes and started to protest again, because I honestly didn’t want to talk to James Burke no matter how much wealth he possessed or was going to possess—he was rather rude and unpleasant company to be around. However mother shoved me forward into the middle of the room and somehow thought the movement would look natural to the others milling about in the guest hall. It didn’t.

James locked eyes with me and smiled, crystal clear blue eyes shining. Perfect. Just when I was about to scurry away. “Good evening, Miss Dawson.” He bowed, pressing his lips to the back of my hand.

I sighed, silently vowing to try and make the best of this horrid situation. “Good evening, James.”

My family never came close to fitting the category of ‘poor’, but we certainly were’t rolling in it either, and we were judged for it. I could tell.

Because while some people believe spring was the season of things starting, for her–it was hell spreading out its gates for them. They’re still in the 5th circle yet she feels sick enough, drowning in a world of doubt and betrayal. She wants it all to stop. 27. In the dream I sat at a table of fine sushi in a room of expensive yet well balanced decor, surrounded by nothing if not the most excellent service. A Japanese woman with silky black hair asks me my name, I tell her. I know it means “mirror” in her language. She looks to my husband and then looks to me and says I am indeed a compliment to him. That my name reflects this well. Her polite cheerfulness feels insidious, it rubs me the wrong way and I get up to leave, suddenly I’m in car with a friend I don’t actually know driving up the side of a mountain. We arrive at a wealthy neighborhood and climb stairs through a series of stacked homes, one floor after another the expanse of space and the luxury contained within tops itself. I keep climbing, not to find the place where I can finally rest on my own floor decadence, but to find the roof. To find air. And when I do I’m transported to a place where I walk along a dry river bed that suddenly is flush with water. It’s beautiful and I stop to take a photo of the river surging at twilight. Little do I know that the flood waters are arriving from another direction until it is too late and I’m caught up in the force of rising waters. I don’t panic, rather I tell myself to wake up, and when I do there is a name, not a mirror, but a real name on the tip of my tongue that my mind wants to speak, to give weight. But it’s his name and I will not say it.

  31. He did not live the life of a wealthy man, by any measure, but kept to himself and only left the house to shop for groceries or walk his dog. It was only after he died that his lawyer, clearing up his affairs on behalf of a family that had lost both contact and interest, found the suitcase under his bed, packet with diamonds. A letter and notebook in the same suitcase described the process by which he had fabricated those diamonds, and his desire that the process should be public so that all mankind could benefit.

  38. Such a relative term. Are we speaking monetarily? Are we measuring knowledge?
Monetary wealth is distributed among the ones who need it least and withheld from those who need it most. A wealth of knowledge, now that can exceed the norm when it comes down to distribution.

She would look at other girls and feel a depth of despair no child should know. She stood out in the crowd, but for all the wrong reasons.

However, when she walked towards her mother’s car after school, she felt all of the disappointment wash away. Her mother would smile and turn up the radio, and they would sing all the way home. No amount of wealth would she trade for those moments.
