  20. The foxtrot was put on jointly by the Chamber of Commerce and Sons of the Pioneers and it was the one time of the year, each October, when it seemed like all of the town’s many well-intentioned blue-haired matrons were able to agree completely on anything. The late summer months leading up to the event presented each one of them with an opportunity to shamelessly pull their favorite garments out of the mothballs, to adorn their necks with costume jewelry and large strands of pearls and wrap aging furs around the contours of their shoulders; to stand for hours in front of the full-length mirror while they tried on their various hats, hoping to find in one something that would bring out the blush and hide the hopeless advance of years as they winked coquettishly at their own reflections, already mired completely in the nostalgia of the upcoming event.
