  1. Tradition – I think of the holidays and the old Swedish traditions of my grandfather. Even though he died when I was only 5 or 6 I still remember the traditions that he passed on. We would have pickled herring, glugg etc.

  2. Is it a tradition to have this word every other day now? Gosh I hope not because tradition dun bit my ass over the holidays. A death will do that. Think I’ll write about a different kind of tradition today. It’s traditional to put RSVP to invitations that say so and nobody does it anymore. This is annoying and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it. Head count, people. Head count!

  4. This is the way it has always been. The way it always will be.

These are the words used to brick people in; to chain them to things they don’t like. To justify the unjustifiable when logic cannot be used. These are the words used to ignore sense and rationality for the sake of emotion, primal and unreasoning.

These are the words that hem me in.

  8. Things in my family often happened as a result of tradition. Don’t think about why, don’t ask questions – it’s just how we do things. It wasn’t until I left home that I realised how unsatisfactory that approach to life is. I have nothing against traditions if they still have meaning, but not just for the sake of it.

  9. Sticky like bubblegum stuck at the bottom of your shoe. Stepped in it, can’t get rid of it. Bright pink turning gray, turning dirt. It was fun while it lasted, now discarded, but can’t ever eliminate.

  10. Sticky like bubblegum on which you stepped, never leaves you, drag, gross, bright pink turning gray turning dirt, you are stuck because it is stuck at the bottom of your shoe. What will finally rid you of it?
One more minute, how many steps? Never enough, never far away. And yet, it is finite. Beginning and end, why the weight of eternity on the manmade object? Shackles.

  20. They both sat back and sighed. It had been a wonderful day but this was quickly becoming the best part. The heat seeped through her cup and her hands felt like they were thawing despite the nip in the air. His mind settled a bit as he watched her relax and smile. The car smelled like a familiar mix of their two scents and the car heater was finally warming up. They both felt the peace of the season more acutely than they had all day in the unwrapping and joking, noise and laughter. It was the perfect reset and quickly became their favorite Christmas tradition; a simple 10 minutes set aside for themselves. Enjoying a coffee and each other’s company. A deep breath and a reset before jumping back into the fun and love of their families.

  21. It’s no falsehood to say that tradition can be lost to the new generations. What is lost is a sense of attachment who we are as a humans in the past that did not work. We are now having learned from the past. Embracing truth and success, even the failure is recognized. Growing from what in the past did not work and making traditions the things that did. It’s ok to let things go, They are replaced by the things that do. But some things are never forgotten because its nature is so true and fulfilling that it makes us whole as humans. It’s in our very DNA. Contempt of this is only denying God and the natural truths as clear as gravity.

part of the humanity that which we deem sanity

  28. It has been my tradition for the past gazillion years at this time of year to express all the things I plan to do in the coming year, then turn around and not do any of them. If I didn’t write it all down, it would bother me less. But there’s something unsettling about reading diaries from several years that start the same way and finish after about three or four weeks. Hopeful starts, full of ideas about how to change and losing weight and being done with this thing or that. I do none of them. I’ve wanted to weigh less for most of my life, but never have done it. Which tells me basically that I like being 20 pounds overweight for no reason. The one thing I did do was quit smoking, which worked out. The next thing is now to stop drinking any kind of alcohol and see what life is like from that angle of things. It will likely be better. I’ll likely be less depressed. But I know myself. I’ll start looking for another vice. That’s been my tradition, too.
