  1. He was the kind of guy you could look up to. “A real stand up guy,” was how they described him. Gave money to charity, helped out in the community, you could always go to him with a problem. But I knew what he was really like. I knew the dark side of his face he kept hidden.

  2. He’s a well-respected man. I’ve heard that saying. Makes me think of executives. Bosses. Alpha-males. So yes, it makes me think of psychopaths. People who “take charge” of silly things like barbeques and reality shows. First person to vote off the island.

  5. respectable is a lie. someone is always in a state of being un-respectable. maybe they lied, maybe they cheated, maybe they stole. everything that this world embodies is the task of making oneself appear respectable in the face of the real truth. It’s never true.

  8. something that’s used as an adjative more than anything. of course, it warrants respect, it describes something positive but something about the word strikes me as a way to pass judgement. respect and respec

  12. Respectable smacks of “doing what’s expected” and – to me – carries an implicit message that people are judging my actions. If I am respectable within a given circle, then certainly I am behaving as they would have me behave rather than being authentic.

  13. Respectabable is a word most people often use to describe me. I am a very respectabable man, well-groomed and gentlemanly. I don’t much care for those un-respectabable types. You know the types. Hair all uncut and pants all raggedy and looking like they aren’t any type of respectabable types. Ship them off, I say, and the better for all of us.

  16. I want to grow up to be someone who is considered respectable. I want to be trustworthy and dependable and just be someone who is known as a person you can lean on and who is always there for you. That, to me, is a respectable person.

  17. I believe myself to be a respectable person. I think people respect me. I do nice things for people and always try to treat other with respect, hoping they will respect me back. Others don’t respect me and don’t have a proper reason for it. I know a lot of people who believe themselves to be respectable, but really aren’t.

  19. As in how do I look……respectable. Was that a good dish? It was respectable. Adequate is another work that comes to mind. It a respectable word. I guess I don’t have a lot of faith in respectable. I want to be fabulous….not respectable.

  20. respectable is something that is earned. you earn it by being a role model. you have to appeal to a younger (or older) generation and make them want to be like you. That is respect.

  25. It must have been the authority. The dominance in him that made my knees go weak and my mouth get dry. He was the boss and even more. I was sure. But still, he was the respectable department manager and I was just a foolish cleaner, it could’ve never worked out. Such a shame.

  29. How I tried – to be respectable! I had the nice house and nice marriage and nice children and I was oh so bored! Managed to extricate myself without anyone being completely destroyed by it, but it was still not idea -now i live how i need to.

  30. I find women more respectable than men…the most influential people in my life have been women. Why do they seem to be more respectable? There is a purity of purpose I suppose…or is that naive?

  31. In the end of the day a respectable woman passed the trash heap. She was disgusted and dismayed at the lack of cleanliness. She called to the man to clean it up but he looked away and thought nothing of her yelling. So odd, she thought that no one be as respectable as she. She knew better then to heap trash out for all to see. She packed hers in boxes and cans leaving it tidy at the end of her property. No one to know just what her cast offs looked like.

  32. Respectable is what people want to be. I feel it is respectable to try one’s best.

    My grandfather died of Altzheimer’s disease. When he was in the hospital in his last illness, the strongest word he would say was “golly!” He was polite to a fault. Even when he was dying, he remained a respectable man.

  35. What’s the point in being respectable when you could be extraordinary? Who wants old men in tuxedos shaking their hand and saying, “I respect you,” when you could have those same old men shitting their pants because you’re incredible?
