  31. A dark pool rose, oozing from the center of the earth, and cast a gloomy shadow across the land. To be near it was to be near death. The air around it had a foul, acrid taste, bitter as char. And it has been said that when night falls creatures emerge from the depths and take wing – creatures as foul as the water; sickly, deathly things, frail and black of skin. No one is safe. There may be more, and none can know what they are or why they are here; but one thing is certain: they will bring about a new era in the history of man – a dark era. No. No one is safe.
