  12. He moves his pawn to the right, to block what had the potential to be a crippling blow. The pawn takes the full force of the impact, and collapses with a hole in his gut. He watches as the pawn struggles for life, even now, because even a pawn has no wish to die. It wasn’t his choice, to move to the right, but that’s what being a pawn is all about.

  26. “Checkmate.”

I hate the smile on his face when he flicks the pawn toward me. Seriously. A pawn. How the hell do you beat someone in chess with three pawns? I groan and succumb to defeat. Again.

  33. She’d never been anything but a pawn, that’s what she thought as she felt herself half-walking half-floating across the ground towards the tall man in front of her. He held out the gun straight from his chest, so that it pointed towards and even with her head. She put up her hands in surrender, even though she could already see the bullet coming for her face. Nothing but a pawn.

  37. Pawns,
    given up first,
    sacrificed for the team,
the “one for all” type theology.
    Walking into a black window
    at night,
    after having a few beers
and playing a few video games,
    drinking alone.
    Always alone.
And thinking what your life would be like
if you had that snazzy tie
    with blue stripes,
or looked like you were somebody.
    If people mistook you
    for a nice, generous,
    endearing man
    because you wore a suit
    instead of a
    jump suit.
    If you had a briefcase
    instead of a 6-pack,
    and excersiced
    instead of just
    kicking back.
    And you lived
    with meaning,
    with hope of a wife
    and a family
    and a good job
    and a house
    full of laughs
    and giggles
    and sighs
    and shouts.
    Full of anything really.

    But someone
    has to be the pawn.
