The door was tilted on it’s hinges and it could not close fully. The windows wouldn’t open and the siding was falling off.

by staying awake and alert
never fighting or falling
except to your knees, in the earth
thanking God for your gifts
and going further this time
the distance is vast
but the time spent isn’t long
knowing well enough
that there’s something above
that sees your faults
and with you, is in love
the Power that blessed you
with breath and this Life
keeps you learning and striving
and beams with pride
don’t forget to be grateful
for every new day
because they’re invaluable and your attitude
determines the way
your given new gifts
and get what you have
don’t let Him down
your smile makes Him proud

I can’t help the way I am, or what I am, I function as I am intended. I perceive as I am told, I respond as I am taught. You might hate everything I am, everything I represent, but allow me to assure you, you’ll never see the world like I do.

Duff’s function as Raina’s boyfriend in my 99 cent Kindle “Vacation from Love”
romantic comedy is to serve as her protector on a madcap road trip–is he a
stalker, or just too much in love?

A function is the purpose for which something exists. Food’s function is to be eaten. A keyboard’s function is to be able to type. A computer’s function is to show the person using it what they want to see. Some things have more that one function.

“Forgive me, Master, but I cannot diverge from your programming,” it said in its synthesizer voice. I gazed into its cold, unblinking robotic eyes. No hint of life; yet here it was, moving on its own accord. It grabbed me by my lab coat lapels. “My function is to destroy all human life. So I shall start with you.”

I used to lie at the bottom of the claw footed bathtub, and let it fill with water as I stared at the cream stucco ceiling. I would traces patterns in the cracks and water stains as the tub filled with the warm water, immersing my legs, torso, neck and ears, and eventually my mouth nose and eyes. Underneath the translucent shield, the world is quiet. I had read in class that when people drowned, before they fell unconscious and their brain stopped functioning, their body would involuntarily and hysterically gasp for air, filling the lungs with water and carbon dioxide. But I was never hysterical. The longer I remained in the claw footed bathtub, the more relaxed I became.
Once, when I was had been under for a particularly long time, my mother’s head bobbed into view over the side of the tub, her pink face distorted and broken by the shafts of light and prisms of fluid. Even under water I could tell she was screaming. She had raked me out of the water and dragged my naked body on the floor, sobbing as she shook me. She had thought I was dead. I could only smiled as she hugged me and wailed,
“I thought you were gone, I thought I had lost you…”
Not yet, mother dear. Soon.

I can’t seem to function without You. You hold everything, are everything, and know everything. I want to be used for Your will, live a life whose function is to serve and love others.
