  15. Up in flames, what we had. Invisible, licking hot flames. Everything blistered and gone. Ashy embers, charred bones. What did we expect with flammable dreams? No flesh remains now, only the fossilized imprint of who we were. I wouldn’t recognise you now. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. But through the cleansing fire I’ve walked, and am reborn. You wouldn’t know me now, either. Inflammable.

  16. We sit on the balcony and stare at the fireworks. I look at my phone, reading the text from my boyfriend. “I love you too”. But we watch for the boy whose balcony is below ours, hoping we’ll be able to see him again tonight.
My love life will soon go up in flames.

  18. The time he went out into the street and saw the flames coming out of the house, is when he thought about things and stared off into the distance, not hearing the sirens or screams. He just thought about how many years earlier those flames had come, and he’d only found out then that he wanted to depart for a centuries old town somewhere.

  19. The flames encircled him as his ship burned, “Damnable Pirates!” he shouted as he searched for a way of the blazing wreck.

  24. What you feel in your heart when you are in love. What you feel in your mind when you are angry. The color, the feel, the temperature. It all depends on where you are and what you’ve done, and how big they are.

  26. I was scared of them. Scared doesn’t quite describe it; I was terrified. They licked out at me like they wanted to consume me; my flesh, my hair, my bones, my soul, my entire being. It was as if they had a mind of their own, dancing here and there, consuming this, skipping across that….What if they had thoughts and desires on some primeval level? Was it only to consume and leave destruction and ash in their path or something more? They were what I thought about while I was awake and asleep. I could see them light up and play across my eyelids each time I closed them. I had nightmares in which the night sky was streaked with shades of orange, yellow, red, and gold; pyres of fire and smoke embracing everything above like two lovers in the night. They called to me as if asking to embrace me as well. I knew they would scorch me outside as well as in and if I gave into temptation and that I would be consumed by them. In the end I could not resist. I became one with them. I can only describe it as excruciating pain that never seemed to end. It came in waves that never stopped crashing over me. One million pin pricks at the same time followed by every nerve in my body being ripped apart from the inside all at once. It delivered me into a nothingness with such an immense relief that it can not be described. Only a white peace. That is how it ended; I can remember nothing else.

  30. Flames flow through everyone’s veins. It’s not just fire related, it’s pure anger and aggression. Everyone has flames in them. You don’t want to be the person that they let their flames out on. Flames

  31. They contain the colors of blue, yellow, orange and red. Always hot. No one has the bravery to ever touch a flame because they are afraid of the way it would feel. We only know it would hurt because of what flames do to different places… the destruction they could cause. I am terrified of flames because in an instant they can take away all that I have so quickly.

  32. The flames poured out from under the doorway almost like water from a pitcher. I sat and stared at it transfixed; immobilized by it’s color and power. The strangest thoughts crossed my mind. I had images of Magic The Gathering cards and Elemental scrolls and my aunt’s charcoal grill from the 1980’s. Yet I did nothing. I knew everything I owned that made up my identity was in that room but I did nothing.

Far away, his mother called us home. We got on our bikes and rode, out of the woods. The knife in my back pocket was a hard, tiny lump.

He only knew my nickname, not my real name: Robinetta. For my great-grandfather.

Beneath my cap, my hair was cut short because it tangled and I refused to comb it out properly. I looked over my shoulder and waved goodbye for the night.
