  2. So, we brought a flag home from Provincetown. One of those 7-colors-of-the-rainbow ones. Somehow I doubt we’ll be flying it from the housetop anytime soon. But we might; who knows. It’s important sometimes to be visible.

  3. American flag. A symbol that represents the country we live in. Free … we are … all Americans. Some people in other countries don’t have the same abilities that we do … we can go about freely, use internet and communicate with people all over the world … flag … red, white, and blue. strong. blood shed for freedom. purity. strength. what many soldiers are fighting for … our country … a flag the represents it …

  5. I remember being a first grader during the pledge of allegiance. normally a very compliant child, this ne day I was in a giggly mood, and was talkign with my friends nearby. I was mortified to be called out by my teacher on this, who asked what I was doing. I said that I was thanking god, as if in prayer, I suppose. Even as a 6 year old I knew this was a lie.

  9. All this stuff about Obama not wearing a flag pin on his lapel is absolutely ridiculous. Frankly, I’d like a president who represents the ideals of this country rather than one who simply parades its symbol on his chest.

  10. FLAG–THE FLAPPING DRAPING DIAGONALLY FOLDED
SOUND OF INDIVIDUAL STITCHES RUBBING UP CLOSE, STANDING FOR KEEPING SAFE AROUND OTHERS NO STRANGE IDEAS, LEAVE THE STARS TO THE FLAG, DON’T BE ONE FIT IN STAY CAREFUL THROW CHRIST INTO THE FOLDS AND FOLLOW LIKE A PACK DOG THOSE STRONG ENOUGH TO INVENT THE ORDER OF THE DAY AND WAVE THE FLAG IN FRONT OF IT.

  11. As the flag hung, wind battered and frayed, we looked up at it and smiled. We were still standing, in defense of what this flag represents. Our country, our people, our ideals, our way of life. Battered like us, but still there for all to see.

  12. Waved at random. Lost to me. Borders on fabric and flap as though the wind would like the tear the colours off. Here, we don’t have them on our lawns. I like that.

  13. I rose from my grave on Saturday, and from there I marched on, not knowing quite what it was I was following. Some sound, some otherworldly lull pulling me in the direction of my forefathers. My arms were all akimbo as I moaned and groaned, tottering like a child in search of braaaaaaaaaains.

  14. represents nationalism and loyalty to a certain individual. Why do we need to wave flags in order to show that we love something? Why not just tell everyone? If I had a flag, it would say “flags suck!”

    by brad on 06.20.2008
  15. A flag is something that represents a country…A white flag represents surrender. Flags are also used for a wide variety of purposes.

I was never too fond of flags. Why is it that a piece of fabric can represent ownership or an identity?

  17. The flag was a brilliant novelty against the sky. We weren’t enamoured with it, but we were quite aghast at the state — at the way in which it stood so valiantly, a dull reminder of what once was, seated boredly on the window pane of a broken down city building.

There was nothing more disgracing than what we saw that day — and with this knowledge, we wept.

  18. The first thing I thought of was Flagg, as in Randall Flagg. I guess I need to get out of the house more. Although, he was a total badass. Too bad he couldn’t see Nadine’s thoughts, because she would have been his baby daddy…and things would have turned out different.

  19. the flag is the symbol of a coutry

  20. When I saw the flag flying at half staff I knew somebody important had died. I had no idea that it was my own father. When I learned that he’d been asssassinated that morning, I cried as much as a seven year old can. I still feel awful about that day and probably will until the day I die.

  21. flag. jeez. america, why are you so fucked up? i used to be so proud of this country. now i cringe and change the subject when people ask me where i’m from.

  22. What is a flag exactly? Something we should look up to, be proud of and be respectful to. While yes, we should respect our country because it’s where we were born and such and all that. Also, the flag may just be a piece of cloth but it stands for so much more. So you aren’t being respectful to the cloth and physical aspect of the flag, but the ideas and values it stands for.

    by JshBet8 on 06.20.2008
  23. Flag Day. What’s its purpose? Nobody knows. It’s just there for filler on the calendar, to make one day feel important for no apparent reason. Just like Arbor Day, or Kwanzaa. Who invents these things? That’s my question. Do they get paid for it? Utterly confounding. That’s what it is.

    by Dave on 06.20.2008
  24. stupid american symbol of nothing anymore. conservatives praise it and critisize others for not putting it in their front lawns. like that means anything. i’m not “patriotic enough” i guess. we’re all the same really. a flag doesn’t define us as human beings. we are all one.

    by katie on 06.20.2008
  25. A flag is a piece of fabric that usually represents something. Like, the American flag is red, white, and blue, with stars in it. Um, not quite sure what everything means, but, I know it has some importance to our country. When I see the word flag….

    by Christianna on 06.20.2008
  26. the flag waved merrily in the wind. I wonder how many people on this site today will write about the Iraq war and the troops over there. I wonder how many will point out how horrible it is or how many will go the opposite way and get patriotic on everyone. And who will never consider that the american flag isnt the only flag in the world.

  27. They rose the flag at the ballpark to half-mast. Joe DiMaggio must’ve died, again. I can see him, gracefully floating in the green, green grass, striped by the mower that criss-crosses it morning after morning.

The driver of the mower is from the Bronx, but he lives in Jersey now with his family, just getting by on the meager pay.

  28. what do you mean to me?
    caught between two nations
two nations are just one phase I’ve been caught between
    one of many
caught between red, white and blue
or is it just white and blue
    wondering where i belong

  29. Politicians who wrap themselves in the flag don’t do much for me. It may be a symbol, but like many symbols, it has been hijacked too often to have much real meaning. Unless it’s draped over a casket, or hung at half-mast it doesn’t say much about patriotism. Though I am proud to see it hanging behind an Olympic medal winner.

  30. the American flag , the flag of false promises and lies , the flag for the to rich prosper and the poor die, the flag of constitutionally wrong laws which we can not defy , breath one word of terrorism then your considered an Iraqi spy,a flag that represents ignorance and emphasizes to never ask why? a flag thats morbidly obese and is spuing corruption and grease out if its thighs, a flag that is manipulates others with its all seeing eye, a flag thats says its explicitly illicit to ever get high.

  36. Raise it above.
    Take it higher.
    Not half mast.
Rise against all that elates you.
    It will furl against time.
There is nothing to change it.
    It flies on it’s own.
    A warning sign.
    A beacon.
A message of hope or desparity.

  38. The first little red flag goes up when his hands drift from my back to my belt and lower. Another when he buries his face in my hair and whispers sweet words in my ear. This is clearly no longer a hug of condolence, I think to myself. As much as I long to stay in his arms, I have to push away. Why would someone turn something so comforting into an excuse to unleash his desires? “You needn’t follow me,” I tell him, knowing I can’t bear a second more of the heartbreak in his eyes. I turn and run, not caring where I’m going, just longing to be rid of the shudders ravaging my spine and the feeling that I’m about to lose what precious little I’ve eaten today. My feet carry me into the safety of the tall dark spruces, down a path which fades into nothingness, until I reach the old fallen tree with my little blue flag perched jauntily at its crest. Once there I tear down what is left of my mask, throw myself to the soft earth, and cry until no more tears will come.
