  2. “Son, don’t you ever let that flag down.” So much for good advice, and a lot of good that flag does me here. The trench is dark, and the rocket’s red glare is not as glorious as we have been led to believe. Wind does not blow in the trenches. The flag hands limp, dead. And I risk becoming limp and dead myself, in its name.

  3. Blood on your face, big disgrace, wavin’ your banner all over this place…

Wave the white flag? Surrender? NEVER.
“Surrender, surrender, but don’t give your self away, aaaaay, yee-eeeh!”

  4. Why is the flag at half mast? Somebody died, I guess. I don’t know who. Should I feel sad? Is the flag telling me to be sad? There are always people dying all the time and I don’t feel sad for them. So just because I see this flag at half mast, should I feel sad for somebody I don’t know. Now I feel guilty.

  5. the flag was
    drifting
    on the water
    lost to man for ever
    now
    what could you do
    but cry?
    the one red flag
    that stood for everything
    that people need
    all you need
    all you need is love-
    get it back!
but now it’s gone, blown away by the tides
    and the everlasting wind

  6. there was a flag for millions of men to look at. the night came and all the men went to sleep so the women awoke from the caves of the new world and burned the flag hoping the communistic world would no longer be. when the men awoke they automatically went after the women but realised without the leadership of the flag there was no one to tell them what to do in this attack.

  7. A fluttering flag stood somewhere in the distance, ignored by all. People averted their eyes, dogs whimped and horses reared when too close to that thing. But no-one – not even the town sheriff – dared to move it. The people talked.

  8. I gave an old “don’t tread on me flag” to a guy I know who lives in a low income trailer park. I got it for free 12 years ago. Upon recieving it, the guy looked like I had just given him a pot of gold.

  9. i remember when the astronauts placed the United States flag on the surface of the moon. I was only three at the time, but it’s an enduring memory. In later years, I wondered how they managed to make it look like the flag is waving, what with space having no atmosphere and all. But I still think that the people who deny that the moon landing happened are kooks.

  12. my love, my life… my everything. something so simple: a piece of fabric on a pole. i am lucky to have stumbled upon this most animate of inanimate objects. i still don’t quite know how it became the only thing that keeps me optimistic. that keeps me going. that reminds me that i am strong, beautiful, creative and something worth sweating, bleeding, crying and working hard for. no, i don’t know how or why… but i am grateful. and i will spin until i can’t anymore.

  15. It meant little to me personally, but it meant everything to them. It was a simple of not only what they had accomplished, but what could be accomplished. It was freedom and possibility gently waving in the wind. I respected their sacrifice and felt their genuine hope, and saluted, and let the tears come.

  16. The American flag represents many, many things. For some it represent freedom, for other it represents duty, and for some it even represents boundaries, government, suppression.

It’s amazing that a little piece of fabric could mean so much, and yet so little at the same time. People fold it, honor it, burn it, destroy it, rip it, tear it and maim it. It means everything and nothing.

  17. I’m sick of people who think the pledge of allegiance should be banned b/c of the word God. I’m all for people sitting out, or silently observing, but it makes me sad that my fourth graders come to me not knowing it.
It’s not a bad thing to be American.

  18. flags are an interesting thing, they can represent pride; inthe American flag anyway. Or even in the Gay Pride Rainbow flag.

  19. for better or worse we hide behind the flag. dividing civilizations, creating groups, making wars that go on forever. can we really be divided or combined by a piece of cloth? I don’t believe so. its cloth after all. usually made of cotton. woven by machines that have no feeling or political associations. I can’t see why a flag can be the reason for pain in someone’s life or the reason for death in a childs vocabulary. They are pretty. Pretty colors, pretty patterns, pretty weird that we feel the need to craft items that we can hang from a pole to tell us where we are. Doesn’t nature do that naturally with landmarks? The ability of people to distinguish landmarks is the reason we don’t need flags. Oh yeah, a flag can be an indicator on a page as well. It can be a way of pointing out some useful piece of information. A flag can have patriotic connotations or negative connotations. Flags can signal hatred, or simply tell you what to pay attention to. Bad or good, I don’t know, its just a flag after all.

  20. I don’t care about my country’s flag or any country’s flag for that matter. I do think however we would appreciate our country more – to try to do stuff for it instead of just pillaging it mindlessly. At school we used to sing the hymn to the flag but I don`t know if they do it anymnore.

  21. waving majestically in the wing like the words of a poem that float only to linger on a blank page of parchment. The banner contains the hope and image of a soul or a collection of souls in a giant community pool of democracy or whatever else describes it.

  22. The pole was covered with scars and marks that betrayed a lifetime of carrying the flag up and down. Through monarchs and leaders corrupt and true, it was as solid today as it had been seventy years ago. True, it could use lick of paint, but in all other ways it was

  24. Wear it like a cape. A blanket. Don’t honor it. Use it. What good is something you have just for show? Tie it to the back of your car and let it fly in the wind while you drive 90 mph down the interstate. Burn it. Bury it. But don’t ever EVER keep it in a glass box. It’s better than that at least…

  25. Flag burning is a hot topic lately, which seems pretty ridiculous. I’m not going to be very eloquent about this in sixty seconds, but we burn flags to properly dispose of them. It certainly seems like freedom of speech to burn whatever the hell you want as long as no harm comes to property or persons. That said, I like the American flag, it’s a classy symbol, but it shouldn’t really be held in any higher regard than any other nation’s.

  26. The flag on the hill waves proudly in the sunlight. Its resemblance to a former life led by my countrymen is astounding. I see this flag. It sees me. We look through eachother.

  27. When you flag something, you highlight it.

It could be an omission or an error.

You could also flag down a ride if you’re in need of a lift. Although this should be done only as a last resort, as 93.1% of all people who pick up hitch hikers are convicted sex offenders

  28. there are many flags, this one is mine: the american flag. It used to stand for freedom, for idealism and hope of life without divine right of god. Now it just stands for greed, laziness and hateful fear. We need to take our flag back for ourselves and for eachother.

  29. I’m proud to be an American. Yes, I am. It’s funny how some people believe Obama isn’t patriotic. Wow. I saw a flag today of the American flag, but instead of the stars it was a large peace sign. I liked it, and think we should have our flag like that.

  30. the flag is one of the most common and important symbols of the modern societies. A simple ornament requires such respect and commands authority and yet is stunning enough to amaze people by it’s beauty. Flags are an important part of everyday life.

  31. i would like to have a flag to represent my cause. what is my cause though?
I would like to find a flag worthy cause.
In the pursuit of this cause i will roam the earth. I will carry a flag as I roam.
That flag will be my flag.

  32. A flag is an object made of cloth which is raised on a flagpole. Often flags are used to represent countries, but can also represent other things, such as states in the USA, or islands, or lots of things really. They can change a lot too, for example Germany’s flag today is not the same as it was under Hitler in the 1930s and 40s. I have two flags, a

  34. The flag represents America to me. Love America and you love what it stands for. Red, white and blue, be true to your country. Veterans who have been hopeless, the flag brings them home and remembrance of the sacrifice they made. Death, it represents those we have loved and lost. Have staff, those who recently passed and meant something to many.

  35. the flag stood bright a top the hill. it wove in the air of the battle stricken land, the wind making it weave amongst the air like a dancer, dancing victoriously. it is this flag that is our symbol of hope. it is this flag that shows us that freedom is possible. Life is possible, anywhere and everywhere. it is this flag that shows us what we hope and wish.

  36. There are two different pieces of material fluttering in my back garden. One is my trousers, perhaps several conjoined pieces of material, hanging out to dry. The other piece of material is a flag.

The flag is ominous and forboding to me.

  38. The flag is a powerful symbol of nationality and other groups of people. Having a flag to identify with gives groups of people a way to congregate around shared culture, beliefs and values. However when flags are used to display ethnocentrism they can be detrimental to global peace.
