  13. We sailed out from the dock that morning, and by the afternoon, we were barely recognizable as ourselves. The time that had passed so slowly aged us as though it had been as many years as hours. It was a strange thing, and all were curious. If only we had had any recollection of that day, it might have been better.

  14. I stood on the pier watching the boats go out to sea. They were so free, so beautiful. I wanted to be one of those boats, with their sails flying free. I wanted to have that freedom. I loved my home, I loved my friends and my family more than anything in the world, but I also wanted to be out there, flying on the wind, with no one to please but myself and the whole world in front of me.

  15. The dock rocked back and forth gently with the wake as the ferry passed by. He stood out on the old dock on the eastside of town in the bitter cold night, breathing softly and drawing in cold thin mouthfuls of air. He waited longer. He shoved his hands in his pockets to keep warm. Then when this was unsuccessful he rubbed them together, but lacked vigor. Then he saw her boat enter the harbor and approach the old, frozen dock. His hands were numb, his toes numb, his face numb, but he lit up and was warmed from the inside and out. But he was still cold.

  16. long and weathered from the sun and salty lapping waves, it led to the one pure joy of her childhood. The candy store that rested at the far end of the dock was inviting not only for the candy necklace that she would buy, but for the friendly smile of the young girl who worked there that seemed to say…it would one day be alright.

  26. apparently when I was younger and lived on a boat my folks had to keep me on a leash because I would try to run off of the dock. I dunno. It sounds amusing now. Docks in general have had a pretty good conotation for me. They represent the time from about 8-10 years old, when my family sailed a lot.

She moved her body a little further over the pier and out of nowhere lost balance and fell in. 40. This is the shortcut bar at the bottom of my computer screen. I haven’t figured out whether the items down there are completely arbitrary or if there’s some rhyme or reason to them. There are a few that I use every day. Most, I haven’t touched. What’s the use of a shortcut that takes you as long to get around to using as it would to use it in the immediate now?
