cupcakes are reminicent of childhood. We used to bring them to school on our birthdays, and share them with the class. Then, we’d go around to old teachers, the principal, aides, and give them the extras. They always happened to have candy or pencils or other trinkets to give in return.
The sweet taste of chocolate frosting filled her mouth as she ate another cupcake and then another. And another. The table of crumbly cake morsels spread out in front of her seemed endless and as she continued to shove bite after bite into her mouth, a stream of tears started to flow down her face. But she couldn’t stop eating, not while the man — the one with the dead arm — that had taken her from her bed three nights earlier had his gun trained on the back of her head.
They both glanced over at the last cupcake, neither wanting to take it, but both wishing they could. They began to speak at the same moment. “Do you mind…?” They laughed. “Why don’t we…?”
It’s not as delicious as it ought be. It’s a microcosm of what we’re supposed to envision for celebration. But it’s a celebration of one. Rubbish. It’s akin to those little glazed pies you get at the gas station. A lonely treat for lonely people. Who needs cake that you can’t share? I’ll throw half to my dog, I guess. That’s what the cupcake is. A guy who lives with his dog and celebrates nothing.
Geez what I would give for a chocolate cupcake right now — better yet a ding dong, remember those– awful hostess plastic coated chocolate wonderful treats with white cream in the middle — O my god!

sometime are good, sometimes are too sweet. i like vanilla with vanilla frosting, most people like chocolate. kids love them.
