  12. once I read a book about sadako and the thousand cranes. I remember this book made me extremely emotional because it was about a little girl who gets cancer because of radiation from the bombs dropped on japan in the 1940s. I didn’t really understand what nuclear war or cancer was at that time of my life. I think I cried a lot during this book. the cranes symbolized her struggle to heal, if she folded 1000 paper cranes, she would be well again. I think she died.

  30. She envisaged one corner meeting another as his rough fingers fumbled with the blue sparkling square base; at each fold, his face turned tomato red, as he struggled to complete such a simple task. Olivia remembered his face when he finally transformed a 10cm x 10cm square piece of paper into a crane. His soft lips widened, to show off the deep holes in his face. His hazelnut eyes twinkled with happiness as his hands handed her the blue crane.

As she broke out of her day dream, her eyes met the crane. Once was a light blue crane, Olivia witnessed a damp, scrunched up piece of paper. A single tear trickled down her left cheek.

“Where are you, James?” she croaked.

  33. You crane your neck to see over the crowd, turn your head from side to side. Then you spot her, on the other side of the room, and you begin to move toward her, pushing people aside, saying, “scuse me, scuse me.” But you don’t see me, you never do. We are the characters from a twisted fairy tale or a Taylor Swift song, the kind of people who could be meant for each other but never get a chance because their lifelines are parallel. And everyone knows that parallel lines never cross.
