  14. There was a woman with a braid of hair golden like wheat. Dried stalks of wheat on the torn ground fresh after harvest. The sun shone hot and dry drawing the moisture from air like the furnaces of hell.

“Evacuate the bowels of the earth!” yelled Archimedes. Drunk with power and a penchant for madness his vision reigned supreme.

The next morning she had cut the braid and threw it in the wood stove. A smell of burnt hair lingered for hours in the small room of the dingy cottage. She took up her brushes and began to paint the walls. Inch by inch yellow ochre spread from each corner to the center of the room until a radiance like love itself filled her eyes. Smiling she laid down to sleep some more.

That evening the moon came up red and swollen. Her child kicked inside her womb and she began to dream. The fires spread across the dry earth and scorched the forest. The waves rose up form the depths of the ocean and swept across the bulkheads. Morning came in a fog of gray and blue.

The child came into the world gasping as all babes do. Choked with freedom he took in his first breath and sighed.

coral is something weird between flora and fauna. it looks like a stationary, mindless plant, branching on and on across the ocean floor, but upon closer observation, BBC’s Blue Planet has shown me, it actually consists of millions of tiny organisms eating, respirating and engaging in the same day to day struggles and disappointments we all encounter.
