  2. Left to the world to assist in the impossible missions… the self defeated… the lonely.. these were the ones that needed her help. These were the ones that were begging for a moment of time to just… be.

  3. The seven white men in three-piece suits assisted the elderly alien up along the scaffolding. He hobbled and wobbled his way up to the platform to his saucer. He had been on Earth for many years, advising us to start unnecessary wars, destroy our economies, and devastate our environment, creating vast wealth for these men. It was time for the little alien to go back to his home planet.

As the saucer levitated upward, and the smiling white men waved, their cigars held akimbo, a glowing banner shone out on the bottom of the saucer: “Mission Accomplished.”

The following week, the invasion force arrived and Earth was powerless.

  4. i have been helped at some point by people. or at least i think i have been. To be assisted is a strange thing to say. I think of a basketball assist, passing the ball for someone else to score. It’s a cool way to think of the word, helping someone else win.

  5. Assisting people is just a job you have to do. It’s something that is human nature, but no one does enough of. Assist a woman with her bags, be courteous, confident. Never falter in helping others, you never know what they’ve been through, and what stories they have to tell. Who knows who is watching. Isn’t it better to be caught doing something good than bad? Just a thought

  6. I work at an assisted living facility. The residents are characters — always complaining about this and that. I’m part of the waitstaff so I hear about the food being too cold, being too hot, not enough, too much, etc. I definitely have favorite residents, though. I can’t help that.

  7. being assisted implies that you need help. In this world, the one who is assisted requires the help of others. While many of us would like to think of ourselves as independent people, the reality is that we are designed to be assisted, designed to be dependent.

  10. Living, old people are really strange in retirement homes. They make me think about Water for Elephants where the one old man actually believes all the lies he tells about being in the circus and the main character gets really, really angry at him. That was a really good book and I’d like to see the movie, even though it concerns me that they combined Al and August. I don’t really like that. It was weird how my mom didn’t like the book, I thought. Yeah, it was a little intense, but you could skip those parts.

  11. It was weird. Euthanasia. It was a weird word. A weird feeling.
I had made my decision weeks ago and I wasn’t going to back out now- but it was just… weird.

Have you ever tried to imagine the world without you in it? It’s not easy. What would it have been like if you had died a year ago? What wouldn’t have happened? What would?
What about five years ago? Ten?

Is this how people feel before they kill themselves? How different is that from euthanasia? What if I administered the shot to myself and not a doctor? Is that suicide? Is it murder?

    Or maybe it’s freedom.

  15. Assisted. That’s something people barely do nowadays. And when they do, they like to think that they should be given a sainthood or something. It’s a joke. The fact of the matter is, there are only a handful of people who help others because it’s something they WANT to do, rather than get anything from it, like a few people I know. They know who they are too.

  16. One time I assisted an old lady walking across the street, she was carrying so many bags it was like she was shopping for 5… turns out it was only 4, but one of them broke, oranges, lemons, all kinds of vitamins and minerals in fruit form were sent flying out across the tarmac. What do I do? Well, I help her of course. Decency isn’t common enough anymore.

  17. Assisted living. You know those little communities where all the elderly are lumped together but it’s not quite a nursing home? I look at them as i drive past and realise that one day it will be my parents in there, and then eventually me. For some reason i am fearful of my loved ones aging. I just think i dont want to let go of them…

  18. Assisted living is in our future. All of our futures. I wish my parents would opt for assisted living. My mother had a stroke. My father has dementia. I hope that when the time comes I will ask to be assisted.

I stare like I have just seen an angel come down to earth. She touches me gently with her eyes and finally asks, “is this your caramel machiato?” I’ll try again tomorrow.
