the rally was due to start at five. the red dirt dust was thick in the air and hung heavy with the smell of oil, petrol and rain. the crowd had grown steadily since morning and there were upwards of two hundred people in the main street at sundown.
my sponge was soaked with goo. there was no way to clean it and despite my reluctance i finally decided to throw it away. damn the consequences. i knew that everyone else would be furious but what could i do. the time had come. quietly i snuck out in the middle of the night, sponge in hand, and headed for the dumpster.
