It was a demonstration. Just that. Nothing more. But it served its purpose. Perhaps all too well... Sixteen sets of hearts were now thumping wildly. This was the only sound to be heard. Sixteen sets of mouths had been silenced before they could open. Just a demonstration, they told themselves...

I sat, I stared. The dirt wasn't especially interesting... but neither was anything else in my life. At this moment, all I could see was the dirt between my toes, blurred by tears.

IT blazed, it burned, it crackled, it sparked. The hoop of fire was both daunting and entrancing at the same time. Practised though she was, the limber acrobat never forgot the feeling of excitement before she reared her legs and pounced, gracefully, through the burning hoop.
