  1. The men in front of me screamed angrily. Their faces were red with blood and their fists were clenched. I stumbled backwards, trying to get out of the fray, but more people appeared behind me. They were angry, too. The sun pounded down onto the pavement and bounced back into my eyes. I felt dizzy, and my ears hurt from all the yelling. I looked up and saw what I prayed I would never see. My father was on the platform, a rope around his neck. The people hated him. I don’t know what he did. He wouldn’t tell me. Whatever he did, though, was the death of him.

  30. A gathering of enthusiasm
    A coterie of friends
A “Heave up!” when spirits are low
A willingness to go where God sends

    A cheering crowd
    Like minds unite the cry
    It’s America when she’s down
    It’s “Liberty or die!”

It’s “Rally round the Tree, boys!”
    “My country and my God”
It’s “Remember well and fight, boys!”
    All lain below the sod.

And yet we live again, boys
    Because you deigned to fight!
We live and breathe this freedom air
    And sacrifice for right.

There’s One who lived and died, boys
    Not to take but give
Let’s rally round that cross, boys
And die so ALL might live.

I always have to perform at them with my dance team and our school hates us so it’s not a lot of fun to look at my peers staring at me with the stupidest expression on their faces. Like, we know you don’t want to see us and we really don’t want to be performing for you either. But it’s not like we have a choice, you know? It’s just annoying.
