  9. Well this is a curious word. it does something positive. It provides protection, yet the word itself is, well, deadened. Why not livebolt or soemthing that woud connote safety. I unserstand why the worbolt is used, but the prefix is odd. I wonder, in fact, about the dervation f the word. Is is borrowed from some other portmanteau that includes the word, “dead.”

  39. When I need to secure my door, I use a deadbolt. It helps stop burglars and unwanted guests. I hope my deadbolt doesn’t stick because I like feeling protected. In reality, a deadbolt can only protect me against the common criminal. But there are a lot of those.
