  1. He tried to be serious, but as the staff brought their grievances to him, he couldn’t help to hide his smile. Every complaint was so juvenile. How could they say such things? He imagined being on a far away star, looking down on all this and seeing the big picture, the really big picture.

  18. Doyle handed the USB stick to Matt, then reached for his coffee. “In my years as a negotiator, I have learned to spot when someone is letting their guard down, revealing their true feelings. When Lucy exploded at me last night, I noticed a look in her eyes, a tone in her voice, that I have seen before in some politicians. It was not determination, it wasn’t commitment, it was an absolute certainty of her own justification. She passionately believes that what she is doing is absolutely right, and that she was ‘chosen’ to do it. People don’t get like that when they are following instructions from someone else.” Matt leaned in closer, and spoke softly; “You think she’s the puppeteer?” “There’s no one behind her, pulling her strings; I’m sure of that now. She, to borrow her expression, is the crazy, disturbed power freak whose legwork I have been doing. And now I have to trip her up.” He pointed at the USB stick. “Put that recording with the others, and talk to your friends around town. find out what you can about her, but without making any waves.” Matt shook his head. “What is it about politics that makes people so crazy!” “Oh it doesn’t make them crazy!”, Doyle chuckled; “The problem with our society”, he said as he put on his coat, “is that if some psycho shoots up a shopping mall with an assault rifle, we try and analyse what we can do to stop crazy people harming our society, but if they go into politics, where they can do much more serious damage, we call them a patriot!”

  19. It was standing right here, at the left of the polished wood table my grandfather used each time he had an important letter to write. He would begin his writing with as much ritual as for a tea ceremony. He would first prepare his tools, starting with his favorite pen. He’d manfully unscrew the cap and the body, lay them down carefully on a bristol paper, then carefully wash the tip of the pen with a coton cloth had had drawn from his bottom drawer.

  20. Serious is when the teacher sighs and shakes their head. Serious is when your cut flushes red and leaks pus. Serious is when your brother is told to leave the room. Serious is when you don’t smile, even though you want to.

  21. “Uh-oh,” Cassy said as Kate’s dad walked in with a serious face.
“What did you do, Kate,” asked Kate’s dad.
“Dad I didn’t mean to do it.”
“I know. What did you do.”
    “Da-ad.”
“Kate, listen, you’ve got to tell me what happened. If you don’t, I won’t let you go with Cassy to the pony camp.”
    “Fine!” Kate yelled.
“If you carry on shouting at me, Cassy is going home and you’re staying at home this weekend.”
“I used Miss Hess’s Expensive riding tack. Mine wasn’t there. I left it here.”
“That wasn’t a mistake?” Cassy said.
“The mistake was leaving my tack at home, silly billy!”
“That’s it! You’re not going to Pony camp and Cassy is going home,” Kate’s dad yelled, his face going as red as a tomato.

  22. “Uh-oh,” Cassy said as Kate’s dad walked in with a serious face.
“What did you do, Kate,” asked Kate’s dad.
“Dad I didn’t mean to do it.”

    “We’re going to pony camp!”

“Guys, this is the best day EVER!”
    “But wait, who’s taking us?”
    “Err.”
    “Umm.”
    “I’ll ask my mom.”
    “I’ll ask my older brother.”

  24. Seriousness is a serious problem. Far too many people today are taking themselves and others far too seriously.
It all starts when a person forgets that we are all sub aquatic monkeys competing for our place on a floating space rock.

  25. The serious look on her face made everyone anxious. She had just stepped out from the emergency room with blood all over her hand and her white clothes, her face filled with tears. Although she had stopped sobbing from some time ago, sniffles could still be heard from her. No one moved, they all waited for the news that they dreaded so much.

  26. only in my sleep

  27. “You can’t be—”

“Absolutely.” He stares back at his old friend; eyes in a deep haze that the other man has never seen before. “It was an accident.”

    “You’re insane.”

A moment passes as acceptance floats over both men.

    “So help me.”

  28. I was serious when I decided to learn to swim. I had discovered when halfway across a deepish waterhole with my 6 month old baby in my arms, that my strange crawl- like swimming style, was not going to keep us afloat. It was pretty scary – and yes, serious.

  29. He turned sharply and looked strait into my eyes. I could tell he was very serious about what he was telling me!

  30. Finding a way to deal with the pain of losing your best friend. He’s been around forever, as far as you remember. He wagged his tail when he saw you and kissed your face whenever you got close. He was there when you were sad, and always brought you happiness. I’m going to miss you. The most serious experiences are the ones that change you.

  32. Serious radio. Sirius satellite. Oh man, not thinking is not a great way for me to come up with words. People who are too serious are afraid. Do I know that’s true? No. But i’m not supposed to be thinking. Urgh. Serious, serious, seriously silly. Suoires. Are you serious? Not usually.

  33. Jasmine was never serious. It was a fact of life. So when Mark opened his door and saw her standing there without her trademark grin, he panicked. What could have possibly happend that tamed Jasmine’s hyperactivity? It had to be bad.

  34. The first thought I had is “Why so serious?”!!
Forget about serious, love fun and smiles!

  35. What’s the matter with you, he asks, patting me on the shoulder with that grin as wide as all hell. “You look like you lost your best friend.” Do I have the nerve, I ask myself, to tell him that he’s right? That he’s hit the jackpot–that’s the reason I look so serious! He is so damned smart. I look at him and miss a few beats. I weigh the choices. “No worries,” I answer. Then call HR and tell them I won’t be in for the next few days because I have a memorial service to go to.

  36. “Are you being serious?”

“Of course I am,” Mack replied, rolling her eyes amid the endless smoke erupting from her pipe. “I’m always serious. Even when I’m joking, I expect you to take me seriously. Jokes take time, and tremendous effort, to create. Timing and tone are everything. So I’d be sorely offended if you saw me as anything shy of serious at all.”

Alan simply stared. He could feel his brain being slowly cooked in his skull.

  37. Scowling with no good humor, the old man sat on the bench in the middle of the park. Autumn painted the landscape golden. Crisp air cut through the wrinkles of his face. Sitting next to him was a woven basket full of nothing except tissue papers used in gift bags. People of all ages walked right on past his serious mug. A single leaf fluttered down swishing back and forth, finally resting on the bald top of the man. Still as a statue he continued to sit even as a squirrel pecked at his polished shoes.

  38. The calm shadows of a serious matter, what should I do?, What would I do? I looked at myself in the mirror strangely as the morning was waking up and my grouchiness was in anchor.

  39. Serious, it’s how I feel sometimes, when you’re rolling around on the bed, laughing, teasing, whatever. Serious is what I want to make you understand, what i want to make you feel. I want to tell you that I love you, and that I am serious.

  40. It’s time for a Serious Face.

Don’t smile, don’t smirk, don’t blink or nod
    or sneeze, or burp or hiccup, cough;
and you’d better not divert your eyes
through fear of losing your Nobel Prize,

it’s systems go, you’re one hundred percent
ready for the limelight, you are heaven sent
with purpose, poise and justly cause
don’t ever laugh, it’s rude because
it’s serious business, in this modern of times
    even within simple literary rhymes…
