At church during Christmas time and during advent people use incense. it is a nice smelling oil that people normally burn like a candle. It smells interesting and burns but not like a candle. Candles have wicks.
I am thinking about essential oils. I typically have them going at night – lavender, lemon, and peppermint. It helps me sleep. It keeps me calm. I think they help with my allergies, but I don’t know because I’m not a doctor. I can’t be a doctor because I don’t like touching people.
The smell of my childhood is wrapped up in a blend of running shoe rubber, snow shavings wiped off of skates, dirty playground sand and cloying, rotten-flower incense on Sunday afternoons. Any of those scents can take me back to a time of innocence and unquestioning belief in things bigger than myself.
