  40. He fell asleep on the train the first time he came to see her. Missed his stop, let her wait longer, longer, longer. There was the adolescent boy sitting in the seat across, with the slanted nose, quick fingers tapping a non-existent melody against the corner of the window, who had taken discreet possession of his wallet. There was the boy’s mother, responsible for dressing the air with a thick texture of oleander and vanilla blossoms, feigning ignorance to anything. There was one of his suitcases damaged during a particularly abrupt halt and there were extra charges and a sandwich he dropped onto the sticky, gum-stained floor after the first bite.

And then- Then there was just her. With the storm cloud eyes and quivering lips, shoulders tired from standing so long, on platform 2, in the February cold with determination instead of a coat. Just her. So very beautiful and alive and there, there, there right in front of him. He tripped the steps down from the train into her arms. It was the best day of his life.
