  1. I wish I was successful. I want to make my parents proud, you know? But I once read that ‘success isn’t the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success.’ I guess that’s right. I want to be happy with what I’m doing, because then it wouldn’t feel like work.

    Later, braver, you learn she prefers mornings so new that only the mist has risen and crimson so rich it’s nearly black.

  3. Success, for me, will never be defined by money. Success can;t be measured in teaspoons or expensive wines or leather shoes. Success, in the end, is measured by happiness- something inscrutable but nonetheless obvious to even a casual observer.

  5. Success is something that everyone wishes to achieve. It’s the American dream. It’s learning how to ride a bike on your tenth birthday. The way he looks at you on the first date. Your first “A” in that impossible class. Everyone strives. Not everyone achieves.

  9. success is a funny thing. sometimes i feel like it’s so far away and unobtainable, but then i realise that the times that i am the most successful are when i truly do not think about being successful at all. so maybe success is just sitting by yourself, drawing or staring at the moon. that’s when it’s easiest.

  12. the opposite of failure.
    i’ve had several successes in my life. but the weird thing is that i’m the only one who can’t see them. i’m the only one who never remembers them.
    i wish i had a list of all my successes somewhere so i could grab it and use it as a shield against all the shame that comes from each of my failures.
    there are oh so many.

  13. Measure it in miles in awards, in plaques, in picture frames hanging well lined and adequately placed apart on the wall, painted perfectly-white.
    Lined bookshelves with leather bound, hard back first edition copies of Proust, Dickens, the greats…

    “How is it success? I don’t remember anything else.”

  16. Success is in the eye of the beholder. Some will say that it is achieving CEO status, or owning a mansion complete with cars and bikes. Success is, for me, a family. A loving husband to come home to each night and a beautiful bunch of kids to take care of in the morning. That is success. Building something out of love, not selfish desires to be the best.

  18. success is happiness. is it? success is feeling like you’ve accomplished something and that you have left a mark on the world after you have gone away from it. success is having a job and a family and being able to hold on to both with balance and ease. success can just be job related and personal professional success.

  19. the meaning of success, what is it? is it “making it”? or is it just being happy? what measures success? it’s not the same paradigm as my fathers, that’s for sure. perhaps one day i’ll figure it out but then again, how will i know if i’ve made it? by being “successful”?

  20. Success, the one thing I don’t have in my life. Unlike everyone else in my graduating class, I am the only one that seems to think that getting all A’s is a good thing. I guess I’m successful in the fact that I have better grades then anyone else, but less successful in the fact that I still don’t have a life. Even after my New Year’s resolution. I guess that’s how life is though. Especially a life like mine, nothing ever happens, at least not until recently. I met someone. I guess that was a success.

  21. Success is subjective. Some people want money, power, recognition. I just want to be happy. Being successful does not come from having many things, but people. Now time to find them.

  29. Success is whatever you make of it. Today my success is going to be how ever long I could stay at work. I’m trying my hardest not to go back to my room to knock out for the longest nap ever! blah :)

  30. sometimes hard to achieve those who have success often abuse it but often don’t. for some it seems unobtainable, for some it seems a certainty, for some it is a struggle. But i want success, im not sure what in, who doesn’t want success or to feel success ful.

  31. Success is the achievement of a goal. It’s what we strive for in life, but it is sometimes to cut and dried so my taste. I like to feel good about what I do without being told that I have succeeded by other people. You’ve got to see your own success.

  32. i am not really successful, but i think success can not be defined by being rich, or popular, but by being happy and satisfied. Success is different for everyone. For me, it is currently writing something worth in these sixty seconds.

  34. if i was successful at relationships this boy would ask me out already. if i was successful he would walk over here right now and ask me out and never ever let me leave his sight. but no i freak him out and scare him away and now i know he’ll never think of me in that way or make my orange mocha because i am not successful. sometimes people think success is about money and getting to the top of of your career but i think it’s about love.

  36. success is such a small matter, when you think about it. how much money you have, how good you look to your high school classmates at your reunion– it’s ridiculous. life should be about the abandoned train tracks you found on your road trip with your friends, how you all wrote your names in permanent marker.

  38. Success is soemthing I don’t know much about. It’s a crazy concept where someone gets something right and is rewarded. Everyone succeeds in one way or another, but no one succeeds fully. People fail all the time, but success happens even if you’re unaware of it. The success is sometimes rewarded or it isn’t and no one notices you succeeded in life. You can succeed any way you want.
