  1. I woke up in the middle of the night, the significance of the encounter, lost at the time, now fully acute in my minds eye as it leaped into my awareness with all of the heavy weight and sudden shock of witnessing …

  4. i kicked myself back under the covers. the bang happened again and my door sounded as if it splintered. I peered from beneath the covers, only to see that the top hinge had been partially busted off, and in fact, there were splinters jutting out from the door. “damn. she really wants her rent.”

  5. startled is an eerie feeling. it’s different from surprised in a more negative response, yet,not fear or scared. i can’t remember any particularly startling event in my own recent life however, yet many small ones about someone or something with noise, or with unexpected appearance next to me. it’s good to have something between the other words to express our reactions

  6. I jumped out of my skin, realizing that I should be jumping out of a birthday cake instead. Imagine their suprise to see a skinless person where a stripper should have been. Bunch of dumb bastard old people.
I reached inside of my muscles and pulled out my lungs and threw them at those poor retirement home folks. They never knew what hit them.

  8. I was startled by the engine. I was so deep in thought after Mark left me and the tension between us hanging there in the parking lot. Did he mean what he said? Did I mean what I said? All I knew was Mark never said he loved me like that before.

  9. I was startled to hear his voice coming from my behind me. Startled not because I didn’t expect him there, but startled because of the depth from which he seemed to speak. It was as if he knew all along I was afraid, as if he was expecting me to run away at any time. It scared me how well he knew me, how easy it was for him to read my thoughts. My lips were hardly moving, and yet he was sure of my intent.

  10. FMJ: I have to let her go. I have no choice. It’s for her own good, really.

    THE RAPIST: Why?

FMJ: I am causing her too much pain.

THE RAPIST: What about your pain? You’re in pain, right?

    FMJ: I’m beyond pain.

THE RAPIST: Tell me how. Explain.

FMJ: I’m numb. I can’t feel anything but what I want to feel.

THE RAPIST: That’s not numb. That’s normal.

FMJ: Then why am I here?

THE RAPIST: You tell me? Why are you here?

FMJ: I love her. I can’t let her go.

THE RAPIST: You have no choice, you said. Let me ask you this… What do you expect of her?

FMJ: Too much. I expect her to say to me “I am all yours. Let’s go write our own ending”.

THE RAPIST: And you know that won’t happen?

FMJ: Yes and no. I can’t think it will, but she is all I need, and my mind won’t allow me to see reality.

THE RAPIST: Thus causing her pain when you don’t give up…

FMJ: What about my pain? This love, which is a feeling more exciting and crippling than anything I have ever imagined, hurts.

THE RAPIST: So you aren’t numb…

FMJ: I am madly in love with a woman that stirs up so much raw emotion in my being that my life is consumed by dreams of her, thoughts of her, visions of her. I can feel her. I can taste her in the breeze. I want to hold her, stare into her eyes and kiss her so deeply that all of my senses go numb. I want to feel her smooth skin taking refuge in my arms. You tell me, doc. Am I numb? Is there any hope for me?

THE RAPIST: Hope lies in respect and love. If you really have these feelings for her, let her go.

FMJ: You’ve startled me in the brutal honesty of that.

THE RAPIST: You may never get over her, and she may not want you to, but she needs this. You need this.

    FMJ: I WILL have her.

THE RAPIST: You are lost. There is no hope for you.

  15. This is beginning to drive me a little nuts. You’d think after going through it several times would make a person less surprised when, yet again, it seems that every new place makes you jump through hoop after hoop before you even get to the actual job.

  16. I was startled awake by the cawing of crows. The skies were grey and clouded, like a diseased wound was pulsing above me. How could I find my way when everything seemed so dark? The crows descended, and pecked at the ground, looking at me with a peculiar intrest. They seemed sinister… Just like the clouds.

  17. and he ran away, down the hall to where he wouldn’t find him. to where the shadows would hide him in their cold embrace. halls, halls, halls. neverending and twisting like intestines. still the feet came from behind, gaining, gaining. it was all he could do to keep his heart pumping, his lungs pushing in and out the air he forced.

  24. she jumped like a deer a red like blinked on. grass wass frosted with hard crystalline lumps. It feels like a miniature heart ttack. It feels like a starting gun and your whole chest jumps. Americas funniest home videos is often funnier then we give it credit for. A startled face is often the funniest, the most unbridled, the most childlike. It is pure emotion, unbridled and primitive. This is my first time doing one of these how long do I take?

  37. It was a sound, I think, that woke us up. I felt him stir next to me, he reached a hand out in the dark and touched my thigh.

Once he was sure I was okay he was up, and the dogs were jingling their collars, following him with their much better eyes as he moved across the room.

The slant of light split the room and ruined my night vision as he opened the curtain. The fires were bright, and the screams that broke the night sent ice water down my spine.
