  1. I was startled when they told me that I only had one minute to write about this word, startled… let me think of a time when I was startled? What could make someone feel startled? Maybe if they are afraid of the dark or if they are watching a scary movie and someone startles them from behind? You could even be startled when you find an animal on your leg… Startling…

  2. “It was just unexpected. I was startled and the jug dropped.” She spoke quickly, rushing the words out in a breath. “Out of my hand, I mean: I did drop it.”

Her fragility was appealing, as was her attempt at claiming blame. I hadn’t noticed her which was probably why jumping up and breaking into song had the effect it did. My exuberance may not have been applauded by the universe, but the world had reacted. Or at least she had.

  3. In London, far far and far far away from America. Everyone is startled that I just jumped on the plane here without saying a proper goodbye. I have no regrets.

  7. HA! I was indeed startled to find my suspicions were confirmed. I can’t believe that it’s actually happened and the, what? jealousy? that slips into my head like a seething poison. I am jealous of who it is, what it is, and how you treat me so differently so instantly. It startles me that this has as much of an impact as it does, because it’s not even you. It’s that, in love, everyone else seems to have it so much better, so much easier. I am in a constant plateau of sameness, but I suppose it’s better than being in a horrible situation. So well done. Happy that you will be happy together. I just wish I hadn’t been caught by such surprise.

    a tiny pale thing.

When summer came, she had friends all around her,
    the wind making them sing.

When the autumn wind blew, she woke up startled,
To find herself floating to the ground.

Then winter, covered her in his snowy cloak,
    and whispered a lullaby,

Said,”Now rest, my dear, your day is done,
poor withered leaf, I bid sweet goodbye”

  26. Startled is the feeling you get when you’re faced with something you didn’t expect. When you realize that you got an A on the test you hadn’t studied for or when you learn that a close friend or relative has cancer. Startled is the feeling that makes your heart jump. Startled is a relative of love. Startled is a relative of pain. It brings both together and it pushes both apart. Startled is a skipped beat.

  28. She was no longer startled by the way grimaces gained ground on normally friendly features at the merry updates of her betrayer’s life, she was no longer disturbed by the violent twitches that whipped her agitation outward at every word the woman spoke. No, she no longer cared how callous and cold she appeared, how hidden her heart was beneath the rage.

  35. She startled me, the way she looked at me. The frock coat bundled tight against her bosom, but the hem of it bristling just perfectly against her hips. The modest pink lipstick, tasseled at the curled corners, just slightly, to get the effect. The swiveling of whiskey on cold, crystalline rocks against her miraculously gloved ivory hand. I was disoriented by it. And I liked it.
