  1. In the shade of the tree the grass grows long and the cool soil seeps moisture up through my toes. The shade of the leaves filters the light down to my upturned skin, mottling it with a green pattern. The shade of the trees shows the damp earth, its citizens and the wonderful teeming life where outside the circle of the tree the sun parches the earth.

  7. It was a cold day in PEI. The looming shade didn’t help which is funny because shade is such a nice word and when you talk about it, it’s always something negative like “it would have been sunny, except for the shade” You know? I think shade gets a bad rap.

  10. I sat in the shade of a tree one day, thinking about my life, and all that I hope to accomplish. I wasn’t only dwelling on my hopes and fears for the future, however; I was thinking about my past, the things I regret, and the things that I didn’t have the chance to regret. Should I have done them? Should I have gone down that path, with an ending so dark and uncertain? Perhaps that would have been for the better, but…we’ll see.
