  9. locked in the river
    ice holds on til spring
we wait impatiently after a long cold winter
new canoe perched on top of the car
a friend says the ice shelf at waters’ edge held him ok
but as the sun’s angle grows steeper
you can’t know what will hold
    what will give way

anticipating summer we change to light jackets
find ourselves shivering as the sun sets
researchers report that for the past few years
    global warming has stalled
    we know it of course
    cherish an old-fashioned winter

    we recall from childhood
    bitterly cold, mountains of snow
    neighborhood children digging tunnels
in the yard beneath a thick crust

in small rooms with muted light
    we sat like rabbits hidden
imagining ourselves living in the wilderness
    camouflaged forts protecting us
from the bully who lives across the street

    growing up in the cold
    we treasure winters like this
    the ones we complain about
    and miss
feeling like Spring will never come
    our longing for warmth grows
    with longer days

  14. sometimes i feel locked into my own brain. like a prisoner of war, stripped of belongings, clothing, numb to the world, naked and schackled, waiting for the end to come.

the end never comes. the reality just sits in. like a cold killer waiting to rape and leave you for dead with one final kiss before the end.

the reality can be there for good.
the bad doesn’t have to override.

  24. The door was locked. There was no way she could get through, but she needed to, she so desperately needed to get her baby out from the burning house. How could she have left her baby? Sure, being a new mother is hard, but not so hard that this should happen. She had to get in, through that locked door, she started to run at it, when the fireman grabbed her arm. She turned, and saw her baby, safe, in his arms. And she began to cry.
