The door was locked and she hadn’t any clue as to how that had happened. Had she left it open when she’d gone? Had her mother somehow thought her daughter wasn’t going to come home that night and just pretended to leave the door ajar, to leave the door forever closed behind her, as though she didn’t want her daughter to come home at all?
