  6. so many people try to be “on the level”. What does that mean anyway? It’s the same as trying to be “normal”. it’s one of those silly sayings that make people confined and afraid of doing things outside the norm.

I had to get it back down to him quickly, as he was working in the basement of a house and we had to finish our job that day. I grabbed it and briskly walked down the steps to hear a myriad of profanity coming from him as he tried to finish welding gas line into place.

  19. I don’t think that life is ever at an even-keel when you are happy or sad. The only time that life is level is when you are in need of escaping a rut that has deepened almost imperceptibly. At least, that is what I believe, as I am a variety whore.

  20. We leveled everything.
We took apart the buildings, the houses,
we dropped lakes of fire from the sky,
and after it was all done,
the phosphorus pooled in the streets.
It was as if a star had dropped on the city,
but no wish had come true whatsoever.
    Only a nightmare.

  21. I’ll never be on your level, will I? There will always be someone prettier, skinnier, more desirable than me. Whether they love you like I do- that’s another matter. I want you to realize how much I do care about you, how much I want you to be happy. And knowing that I’ll never be good enough, I’ll never be what you want…it kills me.

  31. every time i think about how things are supposed to work it occurs to me that there never is one way to do it. then it occurs to me that maybe it’s about levels, depths, layers of subtleties that we tend to overlook by simplifying and reducing everything to something we can understand, something we can transmit quickly. otherwise we stand to be misunderstood and i guess on some level that is a fear we all carry.

  37. Falling down from top to bottom, change your name, your face, your perceptions, your high low level level out. Find your pace and pick it up, we’ve got no time for stagnation.

Creep up, creep down, creep creeping – make sure you don’t look back. For pillars of salt may make great bookends but are not too good at being friends.

  38. Thank you for being on the level with us. I value honesty and balance. On the level means on an even keel. One must have balance to be on the level.
Level can also be a verb. To level is to bring something to an even grade. To level is to smooth the grade to the same elevation. To level can also mean to bring a person to the stated point, often meaning to bring a person down. To level can also mean to destroy or to tear down something.
The verb level also means to tell the truth, as in “Level with me.”
As an adjective, being on the level means being honest, true or steady.
Level as a noun means the different heights of a structure, landscape or other built object. Level one might be the ground floor or basement with ascending levels being given ascending number designations.

  40. There is a level above which I cannot rise. I am held, bound, kept, a step below, one notch under. There is a hand which levels all things, the low shall be raised up, the high brought low, there is a hand which will make all things level, but not the same, glorious in their equality, equal in their beautiful uniqueness.
