  23. The level is high above my head, on the shelf I can’t reach without the ladder. It used to be my dad’s, before he passed away the way that people always do, and so now it measures boring things like shelves, or bookcases, or perhaps the straight, narrow lines I might someday paint along the top border of my bedroom. Even the word itself is even, leveled out with strong ‘l’s at either end, a fulcrum of a v in the center.
