  16. insect |ˈinˌsekt|
    noun
a small arthropod animal that has six legs and generally one or two pairs of wings.
    insect
    • informal any small invertebrate animal, esp. one with several pairs of legs.
Insects are usually placed in the class Insecta ( see also Hexapoda ). The body of a typical adult insect is divided into head, thorax (bearing the legs and wings), and abdomen. The class includes many familiar forms, such as flies, bees, wasps, moths, beetles, grasshoppers, and cockroaches. Insects are the most numerous animals in both numbers of individuals and of different kinds, with more than a million species in all habitats except the sea, and they are of enormous economic importance as pests and carriers of disease, and also as pollinators.
ORIGIN early 17th cent. (originally denoting any small cold-blooded creature with a segmented body): from Latin (animal) insectum ‘segmented (animal)’ (translating Greek zōion entomon), from insecare ‘cut up or into,’ from in- ‘into’ + secare ‘to cut.’

  18. Insecta,
    Six legs and beady eyes.
All the more better to creep with.
These crawlers, scavengers creep with all their might.
    Making you itch and scratch.
Fears and pets, they resemble both.
    Praised as well as killed.
The truth behind such creatures is,
    They make our planet whole.
Creating a cure where there was none,
    Being the centerfold of our ecosystem;
    Insecta,
Keeping the world together one egg at a time.

  19. The insect fought valiantly against the window screen, yet it made little difference. Whether in or out, it would always be drawn to that impassable barrier as though its raison d’tere was sealed within the meshing.

  20. another irritant – or perhaps just the thing you wanted to see. Ant, Moth, butterfly. Flies can be stately can’t they. Wings, legs big big eyes.

  21. small and creepy with a lot of legs. perhaps they think for themselves and are really, really just trying to get by. but at the end of the day i am too so i really don’t care about insects. that might not make me very nice but i was never one of those kids who played in the sand with the bugs and the caterpillars, i’d much rather be doing something productive like reading or meeting people or learning something new. and that’s just how i am now – i am a social, people person.
