  1. The entire autumn fit in a sock. All the leaves and frosts and deaths and chickens rustling in low sun, everything autumn, the time change and woodsmoke: all in a sock, tied with a knot and heaved out into the cold tranquility of stars.

  2. It broke off with the force of the wind, swirling through the air and softly landing onto the grass with a gentle thud. Staying stationary for a while, until the wind picked up again and blew it off down the street. As the maple leaf flew through the street, it observed the picturesque setting of the street mesmerizingly. The tall and mighty trees draped over the street, creating a canopy overhead. Their branches outstretched like arms reaching for each other from across the road. And each leaf upon the branch a different shade, creating a montage of colour splattered randomly throughout the sky. As the leaf passed each tree carried by the wind that rustled through the branches, setting free the few lucky leaves to dance happily away. It danced among the rest, riding the breeze with no worries, taking in the serene surroundings as the journey down the street continued.

  3. Orange and maple. The coolness and the smells of winter descending. Leaves gather slowly at the base of trees, gnarled piles raking. Scarves emerge, memories become padded and muted with color, hope. A time of school, a great comfort, the hand of my teachers, the eyes, the mouths. “I make my face look like this and the concerned words come out.” A time when my imagination was brighter, vivid, almost desperate in it’s clarity, scattering.

To wear with her golden slippers

She thought she was a season
    Until winter came

  16. In autumn, winter is knocking on the door. It looks like autumn for only two weeks. After the leaves turn, it is only fleeting before they fall off the trees, and the bareness of winter begins. Autumn is a transitional time of year for trees and for children heading back to school.

  19. Turning, turning, against golds and reds and chilly air. She fell finally in a heap of those leaves, a puff of air escaping her lips as she looked up and around her with gold eyes.

  20. The leaves crunch underfoot. The sun slants and turns orange. These were the “Orange Hours” of my childhood. I became dark and gloomy then. I found out about melancholy — a beautiful sadness — during the Orange Hours. I rearranged furniture, closed drapes, listened to music and turned inwards

  26. it’s the fall again
    time for endings
    it’s autumn now
    and you won’t forget him
    when you lose your love
    and let him go
    we’ll remember the summer
    and where your love grew
    but with the ending
    you’ll find yourself
    raking up leaves
    and dressing in reds
    mourning your losses
    and collecting old pieces
    of your old memories
of what your life has been through
    so count your blessings
    and make a pie
    make way for winter
    and say goodbye
