  2. ‘Where would you find this? where would you even look?’ she asked. She hesitated, stalled, her indecision and lack of conviction only increased her inability to move: if she took a step in one direction she looked in the other and turned back. If a large truck was bearing down on her without any brakes she was not sure she could get out of the way of it. She felt like a bunny in the headlights, a butterfly on a pin, with the world and mortality rushing headlong towards her.

  6. She parked her car in the shadows and walked around the back of the building without making a sound. She was on a mission, and she had a hunch. Maria was the most effective kind of PI; the one no one would expect. She was charming and attractive and could effortlessly gain people’s trust. She could hide in plain sight undetected because it seemed like wherever she went was exactly where she was meant to be. Even though she was a natural in the light, the excitement of following her instincts and sneaking around in the shadows was still her favorite part.

As she got to the window, she saw him leave through the entrance door. She mumbled “shit” and ran as quickly as she could to get back to her car before he drove off. She slide into the driver’s side just in time to see his car turning the corner up ahead. She knew she could catch up to him if she hurried. She started the car, pressed down the clutch, put it into gear, and it stalled! She grinned and tried again. She was unusually competitive with herself; she viewed failures as challenges. This time, the car did exactly what she wanted, and she took off after him.

  8. She stalled and stalled. She almost never made an entry before he did and even with his encouragement, something as simple and as frivolous as an anonymous literary post seemed difficult for her to embrace in a timely manner. Too often she would overthink her own thoughts and in doing so the thoughts she would finally put down on the proverbial paper would be oversimplified and understated. Her inability to keep it simple always led to overly simple words.

  9. Before Maya can get over her indignation, gravity falters. Her feet suddenly lift, and her center tips over towards Jake.

    “Yes, you do.”

  11. He slammed the car’s door angrily. Why does this always happen to him? What a great day. Everything that could go wrong has and he was furious. His kicked the wheel to his car and sat in the dirt road in despair. Why is life so hard?

  12. The car stalled. She had ten seconds to get out of there. Practicing for years for such a time like this. She no longer could hang around to find out what he was even thinking? Her life depended on her leaving “now” she thought. There was no hanging around. For her own safety leaving “now” meant leaving “now”. Her mother taught her when she was just a little girl. Do not stall, do not wait around to find out what he was thinking, go, get the hell out of there and do not look back.

  15. The car stopped with a judder. “Shit,” I spat, scrabbling desperately for the gear stick, feeling my neck turn red with the pressure of the line of traffic behind me, reaching impatiently for their horns. The car lurched forward as I found the gear, then stuttered to a halt once more as I failed to find the bite.
