Raised in a family that emphasized a lot on religious rituals and discipline, I can’t help but wonder if life is really based on that. Part of me do wish that I was not raised that way but nevertheless, I am grateful to God to be placed in this home.

I was raised a blue collar girl. I was taught that to achieve anything, you have to work for it. Hard work merits success. It’s as simple as that. My parents raised me the right way, instilling in me the value of good, honest work.

They were raised on a small farm. It was always hot so they had to work and play in the hot sun. But one day one of them passed out and had to go to the hospital. They did and they moved then and lived happily ever after.

I was raised in such a strange manner, a manner different than my peers, my friends, anyone I knew. Does it matter? Is it evident? Is it the cause of the inner turmoil I feel? Or does everyone feel inner turmoil?

When I was little I had a friend that was raised by her mom. She had no father. He had left when she was really little. After all that had happened it had made a bond with her mother. They went everywhere together. You couldn’t see the mother without the daughter. There is nothing that could separate them.

raised in a house with
two others that look
Just like you
when you try to find your-
self only for them to
copy what you do
what you do to get away
to be your own person
being raised with others that share
the same face as
is hard to do

I was raised to be polite,
to use manners,
to look someone in the eyes
I was raised to include everyone,
to be open and kind.
I was raised to be who I am today.
I was raised to succeed.

As one, we pulled on the rope, all 50 of us. The calluses on our hands screamed and burned as our muscles ripped at the seams. The giant, stone statue lifted into place; it was raised.

I stood with my face raised towards the crystal sky. In my day-dreams I had dreamt about being on top of a mountain… so close to God! And now… I was here! I could almost feel my Creator’s smile! The trees whispered His name… as did the brook running to my left. As did my heart, and then I opened my mouth upon impulse and sang, “Great is Your wondorous name!”

we can walk, swim, fly, breathe
underwater, over land.
we kissed the moon, and realized
that we loved the sun.
we named the little things, the big
things, and ourselves.
we defied gods, while some made
a choice to bow down.
we would be set if we could live
with vital parts missing.

Harry hit the button a second, and then, a third time. Each time he clicked onword.com however, he got that same agonizing word “raised.” His first story was unsatisfactory; he did not submit it. Thinking surely it would give him a different choice he clicked yet again but to no avail.

She holds me up.
The blades of fear licking my baby-smooth skin,
the stainless steel shards digging into my flesh,
ripping my mind
but she raises me.
Above the screaming pain.
