  3. I can hardly blink. I bring my hand up to my chest and open my mouth, but no words come tumbling out. Only silence. My hand is trembling now. I can’t bring myself to do it. How am I supposed to bring myself to say such a thing? Can I really accept this? Can I really BECOME this? Can I go against everything I have ever known? All I believe?

I bring my trembling hand to my mouth and scream.

  4. He swore under the orange-lit lamp posts of Cubao City that he’s prepared to traverse any perilous path that will halt his way into her heart. The traffic at Edsa was the start.

  5. Not one of the girls knew what they were really signing up for. Take a pledge? No big deal. “I swear to…blah, blah, blah” No one was really listening to what they were saying, until they got to the last line – “The consequences for breaking this pledge will be beyond your worst nightmare.”

  6. I pledged myself to this cause, I pledged myself to this. I have to keep reminding myself of that as I stare up at the bleak ceiling before me. The man in front of me had it in his mind to kill me for that which I believed in: protecting our country from those who meant it harm. I had no intention of apologizing if that meant we were on opposite sides.

  7. You must pledge allegiance to the flag every day when you are at school. If you don’t, you’re sent to the principal’s office and your parents are notified. But why? How come we have to do this, even if people aren’t Americans?

  12. To state, swear, promise. Making a pledge is making a promise or an oath. It can also be something like a plaque, I think. I don’t know. That’s all I got. 60 seconds? Way too much. Damn, this is too much time for one word. How long is 60 seconds?! This feels like forever.
Anyway, how have you been? The weather is nice here today in eastern Ireland. Where are you from? I hope the weather is nice there too, unless you want the weather to be bad so you can stay in all day, or miss work or whatever. Well, my time will be up soon. I’ll see you later.

    I love you.

  26. “I pledge allegiance to nobody,” the seventh grader snarled. So of course, she was sent to the principal’s office.

I sat behind my desk as usual, trying to ignore the phone calls and remembering that this was my last year being the school secretary. Seeing this particular student waiting to be reprimanded by the administration alarmed. She was a good kid. Everyone called her “Rocket,” because her ideas just shot off into space in all their glory. And now she was being punished for speaking her mind.

  28. There was something stirring within her, even as she began to fall to dust. Everything hurt, but what hurt more than the physical pain was the thought of giving up, leaving everyone behind, failing. She couldn’t fail– not now, when her world was counting on her. Not now, when she still had something left to protect.

So she pulled herself together, one last time, and picked up her spear.

    The heroine had appeared.
